How long did you have to wait to find the perfect RS?

Its only been a few months now that ive decided i need some sort of RS in my fleet (172, 182 or 225), things im looking for: reasonably well maintained, within budget, not a completely thrashed engine/exterior. So leads me to the 'how long did it take you to find your perfect car?'

Im always searching marketplace, gumtree, carsales etc looking for my 'perfect' rs. Sadly, even after 5ish months, im either too late or doesnt tick the boxes ya know, brings the hunt down a little.

Anywho, just wondering how long i should keep going for, or will test driving one help keep the flame alive?

Covid hasn't been the best time to look for a RS, or used cars in general. Inflated prices and anything decent is snapped up quickly, usually at a premium.

I started looking for my second RS just as Covid took hold and passed on a few early thinking the world was going to end and bargains were around the corner. I was wrong.

In the end it took me 8 months to find the right one, and it was an off market sale, else I might still be looking.

Hang in there, they're definitely worth the wait.

I spent +9 months looking but part of that was convincing the other half!

I spent about 3 weeks sorting it out, 4 weeks driving it, then crashed it and it's been off the road since. Sometimes all you can do is laugh.. 😭

If you’re after a specific model it can take ages, especially right now. Limited models like 8.08s, R26s etc are even worse.

I can’t see it getting better until we’re all allowed to travel overseas again. Then, all the toys people bought through excess funds/sheer boredom will hit the market to fund travel. Values may drop slightly, but I can’t see it just crashing.

Reminds me of when I first got mine not even a week with it and I crashed it 😪

But to answer OP I was looking for about a 2-3 months before seeing two very good deals poped up (going of past market data) and jumped on both. Couldn't off been happier with them, the dodgier of the two was actually the better one in the end hahah.  Probs not the best advice to follow but just wanted to point out if your careful and do your homework you'll be fine. As @speedfiend41 said the market is a sellers market atm so price's are high, both the Megane's I got have increased in value by 10% ish going off the current market.

Even in normal circumstances it can take a while. I remember test driving many 172s and 197s. It never panned out for whatever reason (usually crunching gearboxes).

Both times I've bought Renault Sports have been more or less unintended. Just end up falling in love with the bloody things.

I'm very much of the 'incremental improvement' school of thought.

I first bought a 182, then when I saw one in my preferred colour sold the first one.

Now I've done just that with a ph1. You can hang around and wait but generally they're all great fun and for some models (as mentioned above) it could be a very long wait!

Renault's seem to have also become rather trendy with non Renault people which is both exciting and annoying.

Started looking in July last year, found car I was interested in but couldn’t look at it bc of Covid, looked at and picked up car end of November. Keep in mind the car I bought was never advertised for sale on any website, was only from talking to ppl in here that I found it. Keep in memory if any one talks about maybe selling ther car in future and enquire about it. Some good example cars go on sale on This site and are sold within hours.

I have never thought of it this way but it actually kinda makes sense. Buy one that isn’t perfect and just drive and enjoy it whilst you look for one more perfect 🤯

Mine is/was rough around the edges but these cars exude personality so I think you’re likely to love whatever you buy.

There was a ph1 listed on FB today that looks interesting, seller a nice guy. Said he also has a friend considering selling a  182. When you start talking to people and keep your eyes open, unlisted cars start to come out of the woodwork..

In my short experience the RS community is pretty awesome all round.

In 2005 decided to trade our Honda S2000 (a flawed car - pity, great engine) for a RS Clio that I had read about. Went into the dealer, saw the car and bought it on the spot. Every time I drive it, even after 15 years, I am still impressed at how good it is - especially at Phillip Island !!!!!

@Lesault revisited your build thread and was reminded of the steering wheel. Pure porn. Think I better just pull the wheels from everything I have and ship em to SA.

Honeslty its one of the best bits about driving that car, steering that through a corner with all the tight powerflex and the skinny alcantara wheel in your hand is just sensational.

I missed out on my perfect RS. That Alien Green Clio III that was for sale recently. I was too slow. And I am sure 99% of people on here would've gone for it they saw it.

And I suspect if it ever gets listed again. It wont be the same price as the other Clios.

Honestly, as @Gambit@Moosey, @lachlan8, @63x1092, myself and many others on here can attest, just buy anything that pops up for sale and convince significant other that you are doing to sell on for profit. They eventually lose track with careful shuffling.

And the perfect RS is any that you happen to be driving at the time.

Adding @rob 240 and @walkie86 to the above list of tragics....

I've also been on the hunt for a while but all the decent Megane 3's that I've seen lately are grey! Holding out for a different colour...

The market does seem to be softening though as I've seen many sitting for ages and a couple have started dropping their price.

Agree somewhat. I think it’s coming off the boil.

Send the grey ones my way! I'm still winding myself up that cars were 4-5 grand cheaper when I was first looking. Still yet to find the right car for me though.

Totally agree about the COVID tax price rise. I can't get over this dealer car. It was already ridiculously overpriced and has sat for weeks and weeks, and then I see today that they've just raised the price another $2k. 🤣
