New/returning Renaultsport Owner :) Trophy R

Hi guys my names James, I moved to Brisbane from the UK around 5 months ago and have decided to come back to the frenchies!

Whilst in the UK I've had my fair share of hot hatches and still have my Sandy Brown Race engined 106 gti tucked away in the garage for when i go home to visit family. Ive also had in the past a 182 cup and an Oyster grey RS250 FF remapped to 314bhp and 350lfbt before moving over to the dark side and getting an M235i...

Alas now I've made the move the beemer has gone and in the back of my mind I've always slightly regretted getting rid of my Megane in the first place. So I didn't hesitate about my next car choice and put a deposit down on a new LY RS275 Trophy-R biggrin.png

Ill keep you updated on any progress made and when i get to pick her up biggrin.png

Cheers guys

Welcome, I just moved from Brisbane to Melbourne. Once you get your new R a drive up to Mt Nebo, & Mt Glorius will be well worth it once its run in (be aware of Police, i got done by a unmarked Golf GTI)

Paul Stokell Driving Events is well worth a look if you want to cut loose, very low wanker factor there, and they do Qld raceway, Lakeside etc for track days.

Enjoy

Ooooh! I have read plenty on the Sandy Brown built engines, he's supposed to make some wicked animals out of those motors. Any more details on your 106? :D

Yeah man he is a bit of a guru when it comes to PSA engines and also does a lot of mapping/tuning for mk2 escort rally cars. Ill post the full spec of my pug up...

Great looking 106 - looks like you could eat of that thing!  Credit to you.  Enjoy your trip from Melbourne.  How come you had to go there for the car - although I have bought a car in Vic before and driven it up and was nothing nearly as special...?

In any event, we look forward to maybe seeing you on a run sometime.  :D

Cheers man its only been 9 1/2 years working on it sporadically but it still needs more done to it haha. A project car is never finished right? :P

I found the car through Carsales and renault online. The dealership in Melbourne had a Trophy R registered (used as a dealer test drive car).  Whilst me and the girlfriend went down there to have a look around Melbourne itself we called in and they mentioned they still had a new LY one unregistered due to a deal falling through so put my name down for it :)

Yeah man defiantly up for a drive! Hopefully get something sorted when i pick her up!

Quick question whilst I'm here, Whats the best paint protection for a new car? Ive done a little of paint detailing with previous cars but id quite like this one to have a good coat of something from the start. Any help is appreciated :)

There are different opinions on the forum, and I have used various types over the years.  After much research I settled on Opticoat, which is a clear coat system, as opposed to a sealer. I am very happy with the result.  There is a very good local guy who is mobile and travels to you.

Also, not sure if you will be travelling back on a Vic Roads permit and registering here in Qld (recommend doing that), but there is info on my initial thread about my car relating to the fitting of number plates etc.. because the standard plates don't fit properly on the rear with the RS rear bumper shape.  I found a very good solution to that, if you are interested.  I think I also covered the Opticoat experience there.

Here is my thread...

Worth a read perhaps, but that is my recommendation.

Another option if the car is in Melbourne mate check out Dan's Garage. He is 1 of the best down here for making your car look better then when it left the factory. A lot of us have used his services and rate him highly.

Check out his promo video of our Trophee.

Was it at the South Yarra dealership?

I think I checked it out when I was in Melbourne a little while ago.

Look forward to it dude! :)

I've used Opticoat and Modesta paint protection (currently on my R).

Modesta seems a bit hardier and looks much glossier, but apparently detailers are dropping it as they jacked their prices up 300% or something crazy.

Nice work on the R purchase :0

Awesome 106 too. There are more than a few ex 205 owners on here.

Check out the Car Care section for a recent body & interior treatment Trophy R job done by one of our site supporters, Car Care Products.

Thanks bud :) its taken a long time to get it where it is today haha.

Haha well I've already had a white and a grey 250 so needed some colour and just so happened yellow is a good colour to have

T minus 3 days and counting :D

This is going to sound a little strange but can anyone recommend a decent tape that would be easily removed say after a long journey? Ive found this stuff which looks ok... http://www.bunnings.com.au/bear-48mm-x-50m-trade-painters-masking-tape_p1661591

Thinking of just covering the front bumper/sills as I just don't want to pick and nasty chips before i get it home and opticoated :(

Hi mate, if you plan to get it done in Brisbane, I can highly recommend James from Autoglamour. He did my 250 and wife's Abarth 500, paint on both cars is still great after 3 years (see my for sale add). We've just him come back and do the new Octavia VRS as well. That car had some decent paint swirls on the pillars from the dealer, so he spent a good few hours polishing those out at no extra charge (he's pedantic). He uses Ceramic Pro, which according to him is one of only two worthwhile products being offered in QLD (Opticoat being the other).

I'd second Rob's comments on the stone chip protection, as that's an area that paint protection does little. I've never used it myself, but if it does actually work as claimed and doesn't look naf it'd be worthwhile on such a nice car.

Love the Pug :) How much (or how little) does it weigh? Would be a quick and rather enjoyable car!

Thanks for the suggestion chaps :) really want to get the paint protection then the wrap over it to protect it more.

The pug weighs around 850kg and i would have to agree with both of your comments :P puts a massive smile on your face everytime you drive it :)

on another note.... one more day!! haha

All back safe and sound after 1901kms! What an experience/awesome road trip that was. We had an epic time traveling from Melbourne to Bathurst, blue mountains, stop off for the night in Sydney and got to see some of the rally cars just casually driving round as part of the WRC that was on. Awesome weekend however do not want to do that longer drive in a while thanks I'm pooped haha. Photos are on the trophy R register now(well a couple of them are)

Congrats on the car! Hope you're enjoying it.

Curious, the remap to 314hp songs like a monster. FF is the manufacturer I presume? Is that something you can get out here?

Cheers dude :)

It went like stink haha :) it was tuned by Paul at RS tuning on a rolling road so he could map it live. I  was making a few quick cars along with Porsches blush when at the ring (y)

FF = Full fat so basically xenons, pano roof, 19"steevs, Recaros, Nav pretty much every option available.

And that was only a stage one map too! All I had done is remove the center silencer and the foam padding in the air box ???? Car had about 11,000 miles on it.

Well the last time I posted on here was September 2015! haha so little update. With the Rstuning mapping weekend coming up I have been in contact with Paul for sometime regarding upgrades to the Trophy R :)

So the list is as follows: Upgraded Rstuning turbo, decat, bigger injectors, upgraded intake pipes, air filter cone, Pro alloy intercooler kit inc turbo cooler, oil cooler.

All will be fitted in the next couple of weeks ready for the trip down to Sydney :)

Nice!

Did you get a Stage 1 or Stage 2 turbo?

Where will you cut up the Akrapovic to install a cat given that you'll be running a de-cat engine pipe?

Do you have any concerns about the intercooler effecting engine oil temps given the Queensland experience?

I'm looking forward to the updates as this progresses.

Stage 2 so will see 360bhp/360ftlb safely all being well :)

I won't be fitting a cat unless I reallyyyyy have to haha but if I did I have a friend up here who welds titanium. As for where I would put it probably in place of the centre silencer but we'll see.

As for the oil temps I have an oil cooler to be fitted also as well as the turbo cooler so ill be keeping an eye on the temps for the first couple of hard runs as I know the intercooler is much larger so ill let you know how I get on :)
