New/about To Purchase 200 Cup Trophee

Hello everyone!

My name is Ben and I'm about to purchase a 2010 Clio Sport 200 Cup Trophee. I've been riding bikes for 9 years and this will be my first car purchase as I only got my driver's license 3 months ago.

Since I am on my Ps for the next three years my options are limited and I wanted something that would be a lot of fun on tracks like Wakefield Park and Marulan DTC. I started first looking at Golf GTis but something about the Clio Sport really grabbed my attention. I was originally looking at 172s but eventually decided to spend a bit more and get a newer model.

The car I have put a deposit on is a used 2010 Clio Sport 200 Cup Trophee with 84,000kms. It looks to be in good condition cosmetically for its age and a short test drive felt good too. I think I am getting an OK deal for just under $15K with a new set of tyres, but since I've only ever bought motorcycles before I welcome your opinions.

Are there any specific things to look for with these cars? Any tips or things I should I know in terms of maintenance?

I have a lot to learn and this looks like a good place to do that!

Thanks!

Cracking purchase. Clio III's are awesome. Major concern is timing belt changes. Make sure that you have this documented - belts and tensioners. If in doubt, pay to have this job done by someone who knows these cars.

Belts at 4 years/100k so should probably check if they have been done as that will be a decent outlay if they haven't been done yet. (service history in general is important to look at, 1 yr/10k service intervals for the 200s)

Side bolsters on the Recaros can wear out if you aren't careful getting in and out, worth checking on the one you are looking at. The "leather" on some steering wheels seems to peel off on the top layer, if that is the case it is up to you whether that is a big deal you can peel it all off or live with it bubbled. I personally had mine re trimmed in real leather. The third/fourth gear synchros have been known to wear out, so just look for a nice smooth shift into those 2 gears.

Price seems good if the condition is right, just as mentioned if the belts haven't been done just keep that in mind as it's potentially another $1k or more.

Thanks for the tips. The belt was done around 65-68k and I think that was 2014/2015 so that should be ok.

I purchased a PPSR/Revs report and no issues came up, however I just decided to google the VIN and one of the results is for a Manheim auction from mid-Jan this year. The car was then posted for sale by the dealership in late Jan. The detail in the auction are wrong, listing the vehicle as a 2009 197. Not sure if that's just a silly error or something to be concerned about?

Welcome Ben!

Congrats on the new car. You'll love it for sure.

This forum is loaded with very knowledgeable people only too happy to share their wisdom.

You should do a shout out for other Renault owners who can point you to a specialist mechanic in your area who knows these cars.

They are pretty tough and designed to be driven hard. Just keep the maintenance up to date.

Did they put decent tyres on it?

Browse through the Clio 3 section to get an idea of what's going on.

Thanks guys.

They're Federals... and I think they're 595RPMs. I don't know much about car tyres yet but I think they're ok?

Just had a look at the ad, only one in all of Australia  Must have nicked my car when I wasn't looking.

I've seen that car out on the road about 6 months ago looked pretty mint at the time. I'd guess at the auction error being a simple mistake?

Yeah that's a definite exaggeration. I guess they mean only one for sale, haha.

It still looks to be in good condition. Seems like a mistake by whoever entered the details for the auction, I guess. The PPSR report shows no issues.

Never heard of them. Probably not great.

Wear them out asap and get something decent on there.

I found a tyre test from an Australian car mag (Motor maybe) from 2013 and they came last out of the 11 tested. P Zeros came first. Kinda disappointing. Will see how they go before looking at other options. Maybe Michelin Pilot Sport 3s?

Unfortunately dealers just want to pass the test.

The car will drive a lot better with good tyres.

Continental stores and Bob Jane (& probably others) sometimes have "buy four pay for three" promos where you can pick up really good tyres quite cheaply.

Hi Ben, When I read your intro I thought you may have been buying my old Trophee that I sold to a dealer last year but mine was black with a rear wing.

I can tell you that 84,000k is about average for a well driven CLIO over 5 or 6 years and as others have said, as long as the timing belt has been done on time. It should be a great buy and a wonderful car. The Trophee, in particular has a huge amount of extras over the standard CUP model and you MUST read the handbook to take full advantage of all of those goodies. One thing that the 2010 Trophee missed out on was the RS Monitor but I never missed it.

One other major thing to be aware of is the syncro in the gearbox. There have been quite a few needing repair or replacement over the past few years. Mine started crunching in 4th about 3 months before warranty ran out and it never got too bad before I sold the car. However the dealer had it fixed.

Good luck with the purchase. I'm sure you will absolutely love the character and performance of the CLIO and if you are not TOO big, you will love the Recaros too.

BTW Ben, We have a bike discussion too. You will find it in the Lounge section under "Non Renault" stuff.

I've been on bikes since I was 16 - a bloody long time.

Just got home with the car! I'm so happy/excited.

The tyres turned out to be Federal Formoza AZ01s, which are a step below the 595s but that's fine for now (they are very quiet). The car does sit on a little over 3000rpm on the freeway, but it just wants to go even in 6th and even up those uphill sections of the Hume Highway southbound towards Goulburn.

As I said I only have experience with motorcycles, but this car makes me feel the same way my Triumph Street Triple used to. I currently own a faster bike (GSX-R600) but the Street Triple is still the most playful bike I have owned. This car seems to have that same sort of playful/willing attitude and even the sound is addictive like the Street Triple.

And how cool is the keyless entry/start!! Haha.

How about that. You have a Street Triple TOO!!

I also had one for a while about 4 years ago.  Fantastic little bike and awesome in the twisties as well as traffic. Not the best on the long haul though which is why I moved on.

Hope you are loving that Trophee now. Beware of your licence points. :)

One of my headlight globes needs replacing and I laughed when I saw the manual recommend a dealership do it. But now that I've tried (and failed) it's actually a bit annoying. Do I really NEED to take it to a dealer just for a globe or is there a trick? I can get the cover off and get my hand to just about reach but...

The coolant reservoir bottle is also loose, I pushed the two hooks/tabs back into their spots but it keeps falling off as there's nothing securely holding it. Any tips?

Federal 595 is a pretty decent tyre, don't listen to the brand snobs, if they turn out to be RSRs you've scored.

Welcome mate, Clio 3 is a great device!

Turns out they're not 595s but Formoza AZ01s. I have very little to compare too with car tyres so I can't say much, but they are quiet.

Yep this one is silver. Pretty good for 84,000kms and yes the timing belt was done two years/20,000kms ago so that's not something I have to worry about for a while now which is great. Other services have also been done according to the service book which is a positive (when I originally put the deposit on it looked like a couple were missing, but the stamps were just in the non-sport section)

Yeah it's quite a lot of reading, the manuals cover a lot of info. One thing I miss though is the bikes I've owned have step by step instructions for small servicing things like chain maintenance, oil+filter etc., but there's nothing like that for the clio unless I have missed it.

Gearbox seems fine, no issues shifting. Clutch is heavy though. I thought it was my lack of experience with cars but I have had someone else comment on it too! Loving the seats (I'm small), just have to be careful getting in and out.

I know that car mate. It was used as a press release demo. If you search through youtube, you might find a video review by a motor mag or Car Advice or some other journo in 2010/11.

Hi BUSGO, how do you know this? I wasn't able to find anything, although NRMA has a review of a silver cup trophee but it has VIC plates. I think the car was sold to a VIC fleet company first but all services were done in NSW according to the logs.

I just pull the front bar off to change bulbs. Saves scratching your hands up. There's at least one write up on here on how to do it. It's pretty straight forward. Just got to know the locations of the bolts.

I will have another search and see if I can find the one.

I have that number plate firmly planted in my mind from watching and researching Trophees just after I bought mine. It may have been a comparo by a motor mag and I'm thinking that is more likely where I saw it.

I think the REN 200 plates were added later on, maybe around 2012 according to a previous sale thread on this forum.

Yep, got it done just using my hand through the gap.
