G'day guys...2003 172 silver in brisvegas

G'Day guys,

Just a quick hi to all of my new renault family.

I just bought a pretty mint one owner 2003 silver clio 172 with 23500km on the clock, oz racing rims, bilstein suspension, drilled rear brakes and slotted fronts with braided brake lines, full exhaust, front brace, rear carbon fiber strut brace, tinted windows and two nice guages (water temp and oil temp). No faults with the car so far and picked up for a great price. Owned by a lovely guy, I would say in his mid to late 50's, from Hong Kong who had the car as his pride and joy and spent lots to make it how he wanted it.

I think i got a pretty nice cleo with my only complaints being that the ride is pretty firm and the exhaust a bit boomy at highway speeds. Also seems a bit flat until 4000-5000 grand where it takes off like a rocket but pulls really well down low under 2000. Not sure if it is a backpresure issue in the exhaust.

I'd appreciate any of you guys in Brisvegas having a once over look at it just to see if it needs attention in any areas and I wouldn't mind getting together for the next drive day you guys do.

My brother has a black Megane R26 F1 cup and wouldn't mind meeting all the family too. :)

Cheers

Homer

That's a Clio with the Works! And low kms to boot! Nice pick up, regardless of price... but what a price!

Welcome aboard mate. Is your brother an OzRS member too?

Hey Mate sounds like you got a sweet deal.

Your car sounded like it might have been my Old Clio at first with the low Kms, but pretty sure it isn't.

Is your Bros name James ? He's the only guy I know in Brisbane with a Black R26.

Nope it isn't.....and there is another black R26 then but my brother isn't called James:-)

Cheers.......I must confess I am enjoying it very much:-)

I'm worried about the boys in blue spoiling my fun though LOL

Forgot to add I've got a Defi link control unit in my glovebox which I've no idea how to work....anybody have any experience with these?

And these are my water and oil temp guages

I must confess I am pretty happy my find :D

EDIT:Woa I just found out those Defi guages cost about $800 - $900 :o

Well I can't help going around my local roundabout nice and quick and zipping in and out of traffic is a blast too :)

I think my front end is lacking a bit of grip though as going around tight left hand corners and hitting a bump has the inside wheel losing traction momentarily but not enough for traction control to come on.

This normal or is it because my car seems very stiff? Oh and I worked out why my ride seemed hard as a rock, the front tyre pressures were 43psi while the backs 35psi. i'm running 36psi all around now....sound about right?

I run 36 front, 34 rear (sometimes 38 front, 36 rear, depending what I feel like LOL)

Maybe take your strut braces off & see if that loosens things up a bit & gives you more front end bite.

Mate I think she looks hawt... If I were you, i'd invest in a CRP (Clarke Rubber Performance) splitter (about $15) to finish off the front end 8)

Interesting that the previous owner went with 15s again - as the 172 originally has 15s, a lot of people go up an inch when changing the rims! They are very nice though

Does it have Bilstein shocks or full suspension kit / coilovers??

Also, I just noticed than the headlight washers now look like front parking sensors! What's going on there???

Full suspension kit / coilovers. I can lower the old girl to the deck if I want too but I can't (well I don't think so) adjust the firmness through pressure regulation of the shocks. But the original owner indicated you could so maybe I'm missing something.......

Did I also mention he gave me a box of parts too? The original front rotors, another set of coilovers for the front end that look brand new (checking brand), has fitted high quality ignition leads, a solid aluminium short shifter which he fitted then removed as the exhaust heat from the aftermarket exhaust made it get sticky in fifth, 2 original oil filters, and original fuel filter, an original pollen filter, aftermarket air filters, the original suspension etc etc :)

Have u a pic of that splitter?

Jebus! This guy went nuts! And then sold it all so cheap?! Well if you can adjust the coilovers, I would lower it a bit as it looks to be sitting around standard height at the moment (and you know, you wouldn't want anything to get caught in between the wheel & the edge of the guard now, would you...)

I will try & find a pic of said splitter.

PS. Hmm... how much for the short shifter? :P

He hated the look of the original washer jets so had these jets fitted new by Renault that pop up when u give it a squirt. Much nicer arn't they:-)

Yeh, they look much cleaner. Where was this car advertised? I don't remember seeing it on carsales etc. I can't believe the bargain that you've bought!

Here is a dodgy pic from lost_horizons old Clio - http://www.postimage.org/image.php?v=PqbFEE9

That's the beauty of it....it never was advertised. My brother works in new cars at Brisbane BMW and sold the old owner a 320D. My brother, having owned a 2003 clio a few years ago and currently owning a black R26 F1 cup, new a good car when he saw one. BMW offered the owner 10k as a trade so my brother gave me the guys phone number, I saw and drove the car that night, and offered $10500. He wanted more so I said $10800...deal.

I paid for the car the next day and drove my little weapon home happy as a pig in mud:-)

I spent several hours with the old owner the next day getting a roadworthy, organising payment etc and he is a lovely gentle man from Hong Kong who has lived in aus for 17 years. He was really happy that his baby was going to somebody who would love it as much as he does:-)

Hmmm...now to think how much Icould let that short shifter go for lol

Love hearing great stories like this :)

Makes me all gooey inside LOL

...but I do feel for the fella having sold it - why would he go for a 320d of all things???

Must get me a pair of those headlight washers. I wonder which car they came off?

Yea I think he went for a 320d due to his wife really wanting one:-)

He used to rally over in Hong Kong so he's a good driver but they are getting on in years and I suppose his wife didn't want him to have any more expensive toys:-)

According to the original owner he had it done by Renault at the time of purchase. They sure look very clean and tidy compared to the black normal ones.

Ah, spousal pressure... poor bugger!

Well, the washers are not off a 2003 Laguna (very different shape, and non pop-up) nor off an earlier Megane convertible (they didn't have washers as far as I'm aware).

Perhaps the original dealership sold other brands of car too? Do you know which dealership it was purchased from?

Otherwise, can anyone pick what they're from?

Hi again guys,

Finding more and more goodies in my car. Seems I've got BMC air fiters in it too. Anybody used these and with what results? The claims on the website are pretty big!

I do have a nice induction whistle that sounds like a turbo spinning from idle until about 2000Rpm.

post some of this porn in the post up your mods section for some

as for the KW's cant tell from the pic other than they are height ajustable coilovers (all of the variants are)

from memory they are:

Variant 1 = hieght ajustable

Variant 2 = Height + rebound ajustable

Variant 3 = height + rebound + bump adjustable.

so is there any adjustment on the shock valving itself?

also do you have all the bits and pieces, height adjsuting spanners....my bank account is startnig to hurt...

  • 1 month later...

the wheels look hawt too and what brakes are those????

Hey Brendan;

I've just discovered what my front rotors are. They are "Red Dot" XM - 40 Groove Discs (213 pounds)

http://www.europerformance.co.uk/pages/ ... uct=158410

A high performance disc with 40 slots machined into the braking surface. This deglazes the pad and vents gasses that build up between disc and pad during braking. As a result, brake fade is significantly reduced.

The additional slots dissipate heat more effectively, thus greatly reducing the risk of deformation, vibration or cracking of the disc at extreme operating temperatures.

Ideal for competition use and anytime that high-speed motoring is practiced.

I've no idea on the pads but the stopping power, feel and lack of fade is sensational. The warmer they get the better the pedal feel and bite :headbang:

Still investigating the rears
