Hi chaps. I thought I'd pop in and say hello after reading murcod's rather worrying thread over on ClioSport...

http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=368939

Despite having both of the fronts off last week, I've still yet to check the subframes. Still, I've got a few days holiday that I need to take before we finish work for Christmas. That will be a good a time as any to check!

Anyways, I have a 2004 black gold 182. I've had her from new back in December '04 - and was my first ever new car. Here's a pic from last week...

As you can see, I've kept it pretty much standard. The only changes being an ITG panel filter, replacing the shot OEM braking system with EBC kit all round, including RedStuff pads. I've left the centre-caps off since the EBC kit went on as I think it looks better! Also, I had the mega-talented Middo off CS paint me my door badges and I replaced the RS badge on the boot with the newer type after the original started to bend upwards like a banana.

The final thing I've done was to paint a little bit of the engine.... :D

My wife Jain, used to have a 182 also - thankfully not in the same colour! She had hers in arctic blue, but it didn't last long until she swapped it for a different bus...

A more tenuous link to you lot over in Oz is the fact that one of my m8's has a Vauxhall (ahem - Holden) Monaro - which are still a rare sight on the roads over here. Although the price of petrol has become more managable these past few weeks (around 94p for 99RON petrol now compared to the heady heights of £1.30 per litre back in summer) - it's still a significant bloody expense! Also, we still get screwed on insurance here on anything more powerful than a lawnmower. But hey, I'll get off my soap-box about that before I even start. Oh, and I have some relatives out in Melbourne.

As a final comment (assuming you've read this far!) - I'm an armchair fan of your V8 Supercar series, which is probably my favourite after our own BTCC racing. What I wouldn't give to have a few laps around Bathurst! :hail: Also, is the Procar Series still being run over there? It used to be on TV quite regularly, but I haven't seen anything about it for quite some time now?

Anyways, I'm rabbling. I only meant to say hello in a few sentences. Sorry! :)

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the welcome! Your forum name confused me a bit as one of our friends signs onto CS as Chris-172!

Do you get to do many meets over in Australia? I guess it must be quite hard to organise, given the distances involved and the relative rarity of the RS Clios?

I've been on quite a few and its a great way of meeting people with clearly the same interest in motors. There are usually some mad cars that turn up too. I'll never forget the day when a I simply lost sight of a black gold 182 turbo. :headbang:

Welcome to the community :D

Our 2nd national meet was earlier this month. Given that Renaults are a niche manufacturer down here, we got a pretty damn impressive turnout :)

Pic shamelessly stolen from walkie.

I'll certainly try my best walkie. I don't know masses about the 182, but I've been under the bonnet often enough!

Good pic of the turnout! Is inferno a popular colour over there? My personal favourite is petrol blue. I SO wish I'd ordered mine with that - but it was a £1,200 option at the time. :(

Are the RS Clios similar in number to the RS Meggy's in Oz?

I'm surprised someone else hasn't jumped in here!

There are only 15 Inferno full-fat Cups in Aust, and 1 non-cup has been sighted

There are a lot more RSCs than RSMs over here, as we have been recieving Clios since 2001 & Meggys only since 2004 (IIRC).

Not sure on total numbers in Aust but I know there were only 85 phII mkI 172s delivered to Aust

Thanks again for the responses, guys! :D

Jain's car is definitely her 'baby' and she probably wouldn't be happy of me posting a pic when its dirty - lol! Its totally standard, bar a PiperX induction kit and the alloys being coloured gloss black. She did have the OMG Sport exhaust on at one point, but it was truly horrendous in terms of cabin noise. Get to 40mph in 4th gear (or worse) 70mph pretty much in any gear and the actual air inside the cabin just droned.

Such a shame really, because on short journies, the exhaust was immense. It popped and banged like mad on the over-run and had a great rasp higher up the rev range.

The most bizarre thing about being in the Vee - is that from inside, there's little to tell you any difference from any other MkII RSC - especially from the passenger seat. Sure, when you're driving it, its a chalk & cheese comparison to the 182, but from the passenger seat, I forget sometimes we're in it and wonder why people look and stare so much!

It does draw masses of attention and thankfully it has all been good. I've not once been in the car when people have shouted :wanker: or something similar. Normally it's a proper thumbs up or a shot or two from a camera phone. 8)

I've got quite a few pics from the various V6 meets I've been on with Jain. Give me a shout if you want me to post some up.

Cheers for the numbers and colours info on the RSC's in Oz - they really are a rare breed over there, aren't they? I think according to the stats, there are around 1,650 of my black gold 182s registered in the UK, and my m8 has an even rarer MkII, Phase 1 172 in flame red. Apparently, there are only around 60+ on those registered. I've driven it too and feels much more 'raw' than my 182. If I wanted one purely for track, my eyes would firmly be on the 172, than a 182.

I'm waffling again, aren't I?

Vee Porn!

To paint more of a picture, Renault returned to the Oz market in 2001, so no Clio 1 (but we may have our first Williams next year sometime). There are around 5 RS Spiders in the country, maybe 6, 1 registered Vee, and a smattering of Alpines and 5 Turbos (Turbo II and GTT). This is Renault's 4th attempt at the Oz market, after disastrous partnerships with Volvo (80s, 90s) and being unable to meet local content laws in the late 70s when they were assembled here.

Renault is a minnow in the Australian market, and many, many people just don't understand what they do. The sports are rarer again, and even more of a stretch for most to understand.

Only 1 Vee? I know they are rare motors over here - but the owner of the only Vee on Australia must feel pretty special! 8)

You wouldn't be seeing many scenes like this, then? :D

Hi Darren, welcome to OzRS- the input of overseas owners is always a bonus :D . Some nice pics you've posted of the V6's.

I too am driving around with the centre caps off the front wheels ATM. You can probably guess why! Hopefully the whole sub frame saga will somehow get sorted sooner rather than later. I'm currently debating whether I'll pull the whole lower arm out today and take better pics (so I've got a clearer picture of what condition the hole is in.) I should have gone in to the dealer when they had it apart.

Belated greetings Darren, from another spouse with the less powerful car in the garage :D

(the Mrs has a 225F1, I'm running about in a 182 Cup - also her's...)

That bronze paint job looks nearly black in photo - how would you describe it?

Cheers, Dish.

Hi Dish,

How do! Is the missus's Meggy the original F1 blue one with black wheels? I think aside from the R26-R, the original F1 still looks the best. Really, really nice colour combination. :) Have you got a preference between the two to drive? Has the 182 got any similarities to the Meggy in terms of driving?

As for the deep bronze Vee colour, it's quite difficult to explain. Shaun's car at the side of it is a black gold V6, but the difference isn't that obvious between the two. Deep bronze looks like it has a khaki-colour tinge to it - like a subtle mix of black and brown. It doesn't sound good, but in the sun it does look stunning.

I forgot to add my last 'mod' on the first post too. A blatant nod to the 197 stickers, but why should they have all the fun?

Hey there Darren,

Apologies for having missed your reply til now.

Yep, the 225 F1 in the garage is the version in deep blue with black wheels. She'd have preferred a black one, but looks like only the Middle East got those (and a couple may have escaped into Europe/UK too but cannot confirm). She was heartbroken when only months later the R26 was announced in Liquid Yellow or black!

Although it's an amazing paintjob, I'm still not convinced that yellow suits the shape of the Megane... although, I have to admit, once de-stickered it looks a bit better IMO (I'd better don my flame retardant suit...). I try to console her with the fact that her car is rarer with only 30 in Australia, whereas 100 R26 models came here (60 yellow, 40 black), and that the black wheels look tougher than the R26's charcoal wheels (shared with the standard 225 Cup). She does threaten to one day have it resprayed in Liquid Yellow!!!

As for the driving experience, the Megane Cup is certainly more sure footed than the Clio Cup. I've stepped up from an '02 172 to a '05 182 Cup and the differences between those 2 are noticeable enough! But the Cup, I find, is nearly as grippy as the Megane Cup, however mid-corner bumps unsettle it much more. Since we've had a remarkable wheel alignment done on it, the Megane's steering has nearly the same hefty yet precise feel that the 182 Cup has. Gone are the vague zones and detached feel.

The Clios, whichever model, are still more chuckable than the Megane will ever be. Those 300 or so kilograms are definitely noticeable, and the turbo needs to be on song to get the most out of it.

I find there's plenty of power and grip in the Megane for everyday use - not sure that the LSD is really missed in my view. If you're pushing that hard on public roads to require an LSD then you're probably going too fast hahaha

Blimey. The UK mob are so way ahead when it comes to hot hatches....

Welcome mate and thanks for the great pics.

Incidentally isn't the V6 for sale? $85,000 or so? bargain
