Kangoo woe

Hi everyone,

Got a sick Kangoo and the mechanic is finding it difficult to get his head around it. I dont think he has worked with Renaults before

Its a 2018 auto with the 1.2 turbo petrol motor. The engine warning light is on, and  what I thought was limp mode, has turned out to be no compression in one cylinder and very little in a second. So its running on two at the moment.

There are no nasty noises (grinding, metal ticking ect) coming from the motor when its running, although it does sound different. Its not blowing any blue smoke. He thought it may be a valve issue but that dosnt look to be the case.

He has spoken about that it might be better to put a second hand motor in than rebuild if that what it needs. If we go down the replacement road, is anyone aware if the Clio 1.2 is the same motor and will fit ?

Also tried to join up here and the I keep gettting " I dont pass security" message. Any clues on that one

Rgds

There is class action lawsuit against Renault 1.2 engines.

Check the web for details. You may be eligible for replacement

That's for engines used between 2012 and 2016 though isn't it?

Regardless @Mikflem if you have had the car since new I would be speaking with Renault Australia and/or taking it to a dealer as soon as possible, if not a mechanic at least that is familiar with Renaults. If it is something major hopefully Renault Australia will come to the party in fixing it. Will probably help your cause if it has been serviced regularly and according to the logbook.

It looks like its the earlier model 1.2 engines after following the conversation threads relating to the laesuit issue.

Unfortunately I havnt owned it from new. I bought it second hand at a fixed price from Pickles car auctions. It has fallen outside the statutary warranty period which is a bummer.

Thanks for the heads up though with the lawsuit. Currently Im looking for a reasonable second hand motor and Im finding thatb they are not too easy to find

Sorry to hear about your troubles. It might also help to talk to renotech - one of the best Renault workshops in Australia. they might be able to point you in the right direction.

if it’s a 2018 model my gut tells me it could share a Nissan engine - which could also be easier to source. I base my hunch off Meganes switching to the Nissan 1.8 turbo around that time.

Side note - Could you throw a megane 250 engine and transmission in it? Could be fun! I remember someone doing that with a Volkswagen caddy and the gti engine. Looked like a fun work car!

by coincidence was talking to my local RS specialists, C and C at Brookvale , about our work managers Clio 0.9 Turbo. they love that motor and mentioned that the 1.2 had lots of problems despite being the same engine with one extra cylinder

The three pot is also different as its port injected, and the 4 pot is direct injection. So probably a lower compression on the 3 pot and devoid of the carbon and detonation issues you can get with DI.
