Just test drove a Clio 172...

Hi guys,

For the past couple of months I have been tossing up between buying a clio 172 or a 206 gti 180. All it took was a test drive of the 172 for me to make up my mind. The 172 was amazing, the clio just felt ridiculously stable and surprisingly fast. I could not find a single fault, I had a smile on my face from start to finish. The second step is now finding one so, if anyone knows someone selling a silver clio 172 (preferrably 2003 with ESP) that has not done over 130000 kms and was looked after please let me know. I am willing to spend around the 6.5k mark however im willing to go higher for a good 172. Im in VIC but im willing to travel interstate. Any other advice regarding purchasing a clio 172 is appreciated.

Thanks

Was the one you drove not for sale?
It had dents in the roof. Is it worth looking for a 2003? Or is 2002 the exact same without ESP? Is ESP necessary?

RE: ESC. I strongly agree with the above comment from Tommo. All cars you intend on owning should have ESC! Things such as ABS, airbags, ESC are potential life savers. The thing with RS cars is that they sucker you in to driving them that little bit harder and on public roads that is a potentially dangerous thing to do. My ESC kicked on a drive day we did a month back. Innocent looking gravel mid corner kicked the tail out. Watch it here:

Any advice on sunroofs on clio 172s? Ive heard they have pretty common leaks, is this true?

They were not a factory option so will be aftermarket, hit and miss depending on who fitted it.

My 172 has an electric Webasto sunroof, I believe they were a dealer-fitted option. It's very nice, the fit and finish looks completely OEM, the roof is linked into the car electronics so closes automatically when the ignition key is removed and driver door opened. From informal drive-day and CarSales observations, Clio IIs with sunroofs in Australia seems to be fairly rare. I've only seen 2 or 3.

The reports of leaking sunroofs all seem to come from the UK where the majority seem to be the cheaper non-electric type.

Innocent looking gravel mid corner = slow down! Sheesh.

Just purchased this clio for $6500 drive away, belt was changed 10,000kms ago. However the steering wheel is a little worn out so if anyone knows where I could score a RS steering wheel please let me know. I will post more photos when I can. Another problem is the plastic in the drivers door is a little sticky (not sure from what) but Im hoping they can be purchased from a car being wrecked aswell. Let me know what you guys think. :)

Looks ok.....

Time is just as important with belts as km's. Once every 4 years, so you need to find a date out......

Steering wheel: you will be hard pressed to find a decent one (though I may have one in a month or so). The other option is to have it retrimed, there are a couple of threads around and there is even a loaner steering wheel somewhere that will allow you send it off.

Sticky stuff: this happens to them all. It apparently wipes of with metho, or you can take them off, and clean/sand/paint them (which I and others have done).

Enjoy mate !

NEO if you can find it, goes well in the renault boxes. Standard oil is fine, but not as silky smooth.

It was pretty hairy in my non ESC 2002 172 also.

Apparently the ESC boxes are also more securely attached to the engine as well, where as pre ESC is circliped.

  • 2 weeks later...

So now that the 172 is in my garage, its time to start fixing some things up. I just changed the engine and gearbox oil along with the oil filter. I have also replaced the air filter (with a K&N filter) and the cabin/pollen filter. Coolant was also flushed.

The steering wheel looks like absolute crap and was wondering if anyone could give me advice on where to get the wheel re-trimmed I also need new thumbgrips.

If anyone has a spare drivers side floor mat I'd be happy to buy it aswell.

I still have to pull out the super sticky plastics and try my best at restoring them. If anyone has done this before and has some advice please do tell.

Now I know there is a seperate topic for car audio but just a quick question. Is it possible to put in an aftermarket head unit whilst still keeping steering controls and the little dash display?

I will post up pics of the car tonight however im yet to detail the beast.

I have a spare wheel if you want to borrow so you can get yours trimmed at some stage. Cheers.

I have just messaged the guy that seems to have done everyones re-trim on this forum. I will be sending my wheel of in the next couple of weeks. Where abouts in Melbourne are you? Im happy to drive to you to borrow the steering wheel when I need it. Appreciate your help.

Audio is doable, I'm running a Kenwood BT HU, you will lose the radio display part on the central display but temp and time continue to work. A specific adapter is required depending on thr HU you choose. Plastic parts can be refurbed, just takes patience and elbow grease. Plenty of info in the Clio II threads and also in my Dimples thread in the Members Rides section.
