ryanmuz Posted 31, August 2009 Report Share Posted 31, August 2009 Hi All, Had a quick look around the forum and figured I best join as I'll be entering the world of Renault very soon hopefully and appreciate the right advice in doing so. On the lookout for a 172, $10k-$15K, live in Sydney but for the right car obviously willing to travel a bit. Can you tell me is there anything I should be particularly aware of when looking? Anyone know of one that might fit the bill? Cheers.
griffyn Posted 31, August 2009 Report Share Posted 31, August 2009 Welcome aboard! The wee beasties like being maintained properly - keep an eye out in particular for cam and aux belt changes being done on time. I have also found that the quality of tyres on a car is a pretty good gauge of how the owner keeps it.

ryanmuz Posted 23, September 2009 Author Report Share Posted 23, September 2009 Cool, thanks guys that's the sort of stuff I was after. I'll keep you posted on the search.....seems the servicing is the all important factor, the examples I've seen on carsales and the like with proper service historys are snapped up in no time and the others just seem to hang around... BINGO!... you got it. So keep your nose to the ground, be ready with finance, and be the first to call. However, check it out thoroughly as they have distinct minor and major issues that can arise at any time. I recommend a well kept interior, little or no sun damage, no tears, genuinely clean... as this is at least something you can see and feel on your own. Thumb pads on steering is a good example. if they are torn etc, you may think "that's ok for now, i'll fix that later"...there are no genuine replacements unless you buy a whole wheel - close to $900. Re-leathering is an alternate, but this is still a few hundred. In short, use extra money for mechanical instead of material, yeah? Hope this helps. Cheers, WOLF
ryanmuz Posted 23, September 2009 Author Report Share Posted 23, September 2009 yeah nice one, will def help a lot thanks wolf! Will bear this in mind when looking. Going to have a look at a couple this weekend, they don't look like brilliant examples but need to get a feel of what you get for your dollar even if not exactly what I'm after. Is there anything in particular to listen and feel for when test driving? And also, given these are more than the average car, will an NRMA check be good enough or is there a specialist or someone recommended for inspections? Sorry for all the prob simple questions, am completely new to the world of RS and want to make sure I get off on the right foot. Cheers. Wolf Posted 23, September 2009 Report Share Posted 23, September 2009 NRMA should pick up on the mechanical issues that are obvious, such as wheel bearing drones, buckled wheels, chassis straight or any previous accidents, knicks and scratches in and out, etc etc This is assuming you are getting the Full monty inspection, yeah? Renault service centres may do a better job on the Renault side of things, but from my experience, i went with Renault Gold Coast... and i should have gone with RACQ. That's in my opinion. NB: Workshop inspection usually trumps on site inspection - in case that's what you meant by RACV insp. As for you testing: - sensor around rear view mirror (black case) - some have these missing - rain and light sensor btw. - drive with AC on full, and then off. - open windows and closed - listening for noises that seem unsual such as the ones that follow below - while driving, turn steering wheel to full lock, left and right, listen for clunking. - droning/humming noise from wheel areas - in case of wheel bearings - air temp readings - electric window motors - smoothness and strength - adjust lumbar support in seat - sometimes the cable has snapped. That's all i have for now. Cheers, WOLF
ryanmuz Posted 23, September 2009 Author Report Share Posted 23, September 2009 Thanks again wolf, awesome advice....will report back on the test drives and hopefully have something positive to report.
rmadrid-182 Posted 24, September 2009 Report Share Posted 24, September 2009 Its a little bit out of your budget....and its a 182 not a 172... but I guess it wouldn't be bad to negotiate $15K for a 182Cup I've think I have seen this one running around my nick of woods, I gave an OZRS card to the lady once but I don't think she joined. Every time I see it at the shops it was clean as... and I suspect it has never been tracked or hammered given how timid she drove it out of the shops.. http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=7600834&__Qpb=true&Cr=2&__Ns=pCar_RankSort_Int32|1||pCar_PriceSort_Decimal|1||pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294963762%204294963424&silo=1011&__No=15&seot=1&tsrc=allcarhome&__Nne=15&trecs=109&__sid=123EC3EDDB47
xen Posted 24, September 2009 Report Share Posted 24, September 2009 I contact this women asking about neg the price on her car, she said she wouldn't drop down below 16,750. When I said my max was 15k, she just didn't reply. But if you neg in person might be able to get it down more.
Tubbsy Posted 24, September 2009 Report Share Posted 24, September 2009 $16'750 is a bloody good deal for that car. I'm not surprised she won't go lower. I got over $5k more than that for mine (with 37'000km) three months ago.
