Viv Posted 2, May 2015 Report Share Posted 2, May 2015 When I put the car into 5th gear, it starts to whine, not sure why. If you time it really well, it won't do it, but almost 95% of the time it will. Anyone else had this problem? If so, what did they do to fix it? Also, does anyone service their own car or get it done professionally? Just to change the oil filter, oil, spark plugs, etc..?
jsr Posted 2, May 2015 Report Share Posted 2, May 2015 Low gearbox oil level I believe
R182 Posted 2, May 2015 Report Share Posted 2, May 2015 Clio II? I don't have a whine but have you checked the oil in the gearbox? There are certainly people that service their cars. The standard services are pretty straightforward but things like timing belt need a professional unless you are particularly competent. One thing to keep in mind is that service is very important to these cars and regarded highly at sale time. At a minimum I'd keep a detailed record of what you did and receipts for parts if you decided to go this route.
Viv Posted 2, May 2015 Author Report Share Posted 2, May 2015 Yeah, it is a Clio II and I haven't checked the oil, but I will. I attempted to do a basic service today but as I went to open the sump plug, it was a weird 5/16" socket type. I wasn't able to find a drive to fit it, same with the anti-tamper screws, they are a weird size, where can I get the parts for these? I've tried SuperCheap but they didn't have it. Where can I get these things?
itsdamo Posted 2, May 2015 Report Share Posted 2, May 2015 It is metric... 8mm square section socket for the sump plug. Make sure you have a new sump plug washer. This may help... Google is your friend... http://www.cliosport.net/content/guides/fubar/oil_guide.pdf Something like this... It is available locally if you try specialist tool shops, or eBay. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-tool-sump-plug-key-/191331136620?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Car+Make%3ARenault%7CModel%3AClio%7CCars+Type%3AWilliams&hash=item2c8c39746c Same again for the torx tools... Torx bits and sockets are common enough these days to find almost anywhere...
R182 Posted 2, May 2015 Report Share Posted 2, May 2015 Welcome to French! I think most people set themselves up off ebay from what I can tell. Also, I assume you are flowing the service book? You mentioned spark plugs above... they are spiffy ones, you don't want to be changing them every service.
Matt205 Posted 2, May 2015 Report Share Posted 2, May 2015 Thought this was going to be a thread about Vicky Butler-Henderson..... Yep, gearbox oil level, Don't leave it long.

That's pretty helpful, I knew how to service a car, but when I got under it today, everything was weird, went to change the spark plugs, I had a size 40 key, but I needed a size smaller, 30 got too small. Yeah, I didn't really plan on changing it every service but the service is due and I wanted to just get it out of the way so I have the money for the belts too. Viv Posted 2, May 2015 Author Report Share Posted 2, May 2015 Also, nothing really important but more curiosity, what's the "F" mean, next to the sump?
Viv Posted 3, May 2015 Author Report Share Posted 3, May 2015 Also, should I completely drain the gearbox oil or can I just top it up? I don't know when it was last changed..
R182 Posted 3, May 2015 Report Share Posted 3, May 2015 You should completely change it ... but topping it up may be a good interim measure if you can't get to it fully for a few days.
Viv Posted 4, May 2015 Author Report Share Posted 4, May 2015 Yeah, I don't really have the square drive to open it, I guess il just top it up and see how it goes, if it doesn't change the whining, I'll have to buy more bottles.
