D82 Posted 19, October 2005 Report Share Posted 19, October 2005 I would like to have a bitch, and as such.. will. [bitch] I have a lowly 56k Connection, and generally the pages take a while to load (However are faster than they used to be). However it appears that the forums are filling up with peoples signatures instead of what they are actually writing, Taking 50 years to make a page load on my computer. Clearly I don't have an issue with an amusing quote at the bottom (As i Have one), but don't feel that massive images are needed to enhance the forum experience.. ClioF1 Posted 19, October 2005 Report Share Posted 19, October 2005 Hey I think i'm guilty of starting the sig banners on here D82... Does it make any difference that mine is only a tiny banner, a few kb? Maybe other people haven't used high enough compression on their photos? Or maybe your connection really sucks? What do other people think? Should the pics come down?
NFG Posted 19, October 2005 Report Share Posted 19, October 2005 The webbrowser Opera allows you to load a page without images, or with cached-already images only, with a single keystroke. The problem isn't that you're on 56k, it's that you're using the wrong browser. http://opera.com <- free, and IMHO better than Firefox. PaulD Posted 19, October 2005 Report Share Posted 19, October 2005 Guys & gals, I gotta be honest and say that the sigs and avatars of women is getting a little over the top.. There are enough images of half naked women around on the net without us cramming a few more on here.. And this is a family show! So please, remove sigs and avtars with women naked or otherwise. I dont know where that may lead us to. With reference to car sigs, my concern here is that we are already exceeding our 5gb!!! limit each month, and my contact has been 'bumping' us each month so we get through.. I am sure all these images (maybe only 20-50k each) are adding up. I would personally (as admin) like to see car images for avtars, and text only for sigs. Comments welcome. Thanks for your understanding PaulD
ClioF1 Posted 19, October 2005 Report Share Posted 19, October 2005 My sig banner is hosted at imageshack... does the forum software pull the image across to the server then to the user? I would have thought it sends out a html page with tags and link to the pic and the user's browser pulls the image across, therefore not contributing to the 5Gb? Thanks for your understanding PaulD ditto but also.... some of it isnt really work safe... as in im looking through the forum and people going past think thats it some sort of porn discussion thing... so anychance of taking those avatars off (*bump* Renault ) not because im being a prick but it makes it a little sus at work cheers
PaulD Posted 19, October 2005 Report Share Posted 19, October 2005 ClioF1, you are probably correct. Some of the avatars are hosted by the site, but most banners and avtars are hosted elsewhere, so shouldnt contribute to the 5gb Any ideas why we churn that much data? do people use the gallery that much? seems like a lot to me. paulo Posted 19, October 2005 Report Share Posted 19, October 2005 Alright she's scrapped off, although my sig pic was also hosted from imageshack. Just thought we needed some enlightenment. Come'on we know what cars combine with...

Ok, so we are pretty sure that the 5Gb isn't getting chewed up from banners... where does that leave 56k users like D82? Do people want banners to stay or do we remove them all together? Maybe we can put a size limit on them, say 50kb or something? I think we need Mistareno or an IT guru in this discussion on the 5Gb getting chewed up though... he really knew his stuff re: fixing the site previously. If we can keep the hosting costs down that means the forum stays cheap for everyone and you don't have to fork out any extra Paul... Another thing, it would be good if people don't use swear words in posts (or at least masking them with intentional typos). I get a big blue 'profanity detected' screen if someone swears in a thread and I can't see it at work.
PaulD Posted 20, October 2005 Report Share Posted 20, October 2005 Actually the final look of this site was done by moi, and the header final mod by rex-static.. Mistareno was very helpful and tought me a bit more about html than i ever wanted to know!! That said, there are some more mods i would like to do.. ie adding a link to gallery, faq etc off the main forum page, rather than going back to the front page. moosey was keen to add some content to the front page, and even add some 'how to's' in the new faq section, vehicle specs, links etc etc etc.. all a matter of time. stickers will be out very soon, so its happening, just a slow process. On that topic, users who have contributed to the donation button at the bottom of the screen will get a sticker for nix. they have already helped out.. thanks to all of you out there.. yes both of you Otherwise stickers will be sold at a small profit to cover hosting costs. We are opening a new bank account without fees and charges, so this can be used to pay for hosting. I would prefer to get my personal finances out of the website. the cleaner and more separate it is, the better in my opinion. Anyone with ideas or new sections they want to write, ie vehicle specs, how to guides on stereos, brakes, etc etc.. feel free to post and we can incorportate as we go! sorry got a bit off topic there
biologist Posted 20, October 2005 Report Share Posted 20, October 2005 I think the 5Gig plus is the traffic load we represent to the server as it processes our requests for pages and sends them down. Images not held onsite may require some processing time but I can't be sure as I've not had any experience in how the user browser and servers deal with hosted images like this. Yes Mistareno would be good to ask this one. Perhaps we should remove all sig images for now and see if we have any appreciable drop in our daily traffic stats? Just checked the forum stats. The forum database is just under 25 Meg and the avatar directory is only 82 kb so that 5Gig figure is all traffic based. We are popular! and most people would appear to be using hosted images so its either we just yack to one another way to much, or those hosted images do load up the host server to some extent or a little of both. Cheers,

ClioF1, if you need a hand doing vehicle specs/differences etc I'd be glad to lend a hand also. Would be good to include OS models too as the questions come up often enough. ClioF1 Posted 20, October 2005 Report Share Posted 20, October 2005 RSC172, I think wheel weights would be an important FAQ too I have most the specs already, but if you know of any sites with obscure facts, specs, etc. that would be sweet. Ok I'll get to work on putting together some specs over the next few weeks and I'll check with Moosey to see how he wanted it all to work... e.Sport Posted 20, October 2005 Report Share Posted 20, October 2005 ok i ditched the babe Renault, as posted above your original avatar was funny but somewhat embarassing for me when my 6 & 10yr olds were wondering what dad was up to on the computer... very much appreciated the inference, but that kind of stuff is bordering on lewdish behavior (maybe too strong a word) on this popular forum... i think your new one is very funny as well, the same kind of humour, that borders on the sublime to the ridiculous well done, e.sport ps. Renault check your pm

Perhaps putting vehicle specs and rim weights will reduce bandwidth due to no more questions being asked! But I agree, rim weights is another that needs to be done. PaulD Posted 20, October 2005 Report Share Posted 20, October 2005 If you post new information as a new topic in the website feedback section, then we can take it and mod as necessary. A hint.. for those of you that are html savvy, no problems from me if you copy the source code from the front page, and try your own version of links, info pages etc... then host it somewhere temporary, and post a link to a new page, so we can evaluate.. maybe more productive than waiting for us to do something! mua ha.. And if html is a weird word to you, then just post the info and we will see what we can do!
Vukie Posted 20, October 2005 Report Share Posted 20, October 2005 I think to reduce bandwidth we just need to get Kennis to stop making up new threads about which wheel and rim package he is going to buy

mistareno Posted 20, October 2005 Report Share Posted 20, October 2005 I'm probably a little more guilty than most with my signature... I don't always have an image, but when an RCCV event is coming up I usually insert a reminder in my signature (both here and AF). These images are always just a linked image and the image is always hosted on the RCCV website... This would of course affect the page load speed, but shouldn't affect OzRS bandwidth... I'll try and make them a little smaller in the future
