Hi Noob here from Melbourne

R1 Crasher

I'd say a middle range 172, or a very well loved high kay 182 non cup for $10K

Call me biased but the best 2nd hand 182 in Australia was sold to SMC last october :P

-Good luck, Dan.

Thanks for the replys guys.

As I am Mr fussy, the car that I have seen that is very nice, not absolute mint but very nice is an 03 first reg 05 with 79k's with good history for around 11k.To me the car is worth 10K, but I bow to superior knowledge from this forum.

Or do I hang back and wait to see if the car doesn't sell and try for 10k?

I am in no real hurry to buy,as long as the car is right.Colour not too important.

Howdy R1,

I just bought a 2002 172 and all I can say is, do it...NOW! :D

It pays to be fussy, but not too fussy. I'm very fussy too but I was also aware that even a low k example can have oxidised headlights, less than perfect steering wheel/thumb grips and maybe a stiff clutch action. Likely also to have one or two little scratches/minor dints and a few scuffs on the alloys. Mine is a one lady owner, full service history 70,000k 172 and it had all of these niggly things. But it pays to remember they are just niggles, and they're all things that can be fixed with a few weekends work and a few hundred dollars. So my advice is don't be put off by them, if you find a genuine car, in good overall condition with low ks, well maintained, go for it.

There's been a few low k gooduns popping up lately (the one that Wolf recommends looks like it's worth a look) for around and sometimes under 10k. I think good low k ones at this price represent fantastic bang for your buck. There's nothing out there for the price that comes close in terms of an overall package.

Good luck

Dave

Having just been through this over last couple of weeks with a cheap Megane... some tips...

Any cheap european car - Get it checked out first - by a renault specialist (quite few are named on this forum). Also IMPORTANT - beware of flood damaged cars coming in from QLD. They are starting to surface in NSW + VIC. They clean them up and flog them off cheap. To the naked eye they look fine. After that checks out - look at service history - Oh - and beware - different states have different regulations regarding roadworthy - i just found that one out !! So, demand pink slip, get it checked out BY RENAULT SPECIALIST, check service history - and if its been done by reputable renault specialist, check if its up to major service - and read service reports THOROUGHLY - including the notes at the bottom of the page - things like rotors 80% worn, sump damaged + repaired, brake replacement due at next service... yes I learnt that one too !!) and you should be fine.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes it's probably best to get it inspected by a Renault expert.Once finding the, what i consider the right car and a deal agreed subject to a an expert inspection will I purchase. Having said that I recently drove a Sport Clio that had been serviced and maintained by "Renault experts" and the car was a pig. So maybe not all are experts hey.

As I already stated I am in no great hurry and will wait for the "right car for me" to come along.
