Boffin Posted 20, November 2016 Report Share Posted 20, November 2016 Hi All! Bought a Clio RS182 Cup around 6 months ago as a little fun toy to have on the side and it gives me a giggle whenever I go out for a blat. Had to do the timing belt as soon as I bought it (turned out it had never been done and was down to the canvas - finding out after I had driven it from Melbourne to Sydney of course) but other than the whole palava with rear wheel bearings it's been cruisy motoring. According to everyone who's been under it its in good shape and the engine is making healthy power. Bought it with some pretty scratched alloys, so it's now sitting on a set of anthracite 2118s wrapped in RE003s. The only other mod being a KTR intake to give it a little more voice. Joining up just looking to talk cars, as well as receive advice for possible mods to come. Following the herd and on the hunt for a Cupra R front lip, and I think the Whiteline Swaybar are possibly next on the list. This is me and the car on a little photoshoot of mine, shortly after someone poured a whole bucket of water on themselves at 1am on a cold July night Cheers!

micmat Posted 20, November 2016 Report Share Posted 20, November 2016 Hi --I have exactly the same model ,colour and all---also use it as a fun WE toy and find it good for long trips ( my other car does not have cc)---they are surprisngly comfortable for long distance travel. I have also done the belts and have very scratched up wheels --not sure what to do yet ,probably just touch up until due for new set of tyres Still undecided about the lip--may put the front down too much ? whats involved in the intake fitment

Boffin Posted 20, November 2016 Author Report Share Posted 20, November 2016 Wow what a warm welcome! Its refreshing to actually be somewhere where you don't have to wait days for a response Welcome!Great story, nice car, awesome pic. You'll fit in well around here.Cheers,Rory Thanks for the kind words, I sure hope so! Love the plate! Nice car too [emoji41] Thanks! I was edging toward the more conventional 'CUP 182' or thereabouts, but I thought I needed to have some French in it. Oddly enough, '18 TWO' was taken while I was thinking about it, so if they are on these pages I'd love to give them a wave! Hi --I have exactly the same model ,colour and all---also use it as a fun WE toy and find it good for long trips ( my other car does not have cc)---they are surprisngly comfortable for long distance travel. I have also done the belts and have very scratched up wheels --not sure what to do yet ,probably just touch up until due for new set of tyres Still undecided about the lip--may put the front down too much ? whats involved in the intake fitment Yew! Yeah my car journo mate (who accompanied me on the leg home) and myself were happily surprised with its road manner on the long haul. Shortish 5th gear is a bit of a downer on the Hume but it's to be expected I guess. I never really gelled with the design of the Cup wheels, and I thought 16in was always a bit big on the car so I was looking for the change. The tyres were actually in real good shape too, but the Speedline Corse's came on Gumtree at a good price and I shamelessly caved. They need some new stickers on them but they are in pretty good knick and the price was right. As for the intake, it was shipped without the instructions, but its a fairly straight forward install just by looking at pics online. With that, the hardest part was actually taking the old air box out. Some of the bolts are downright inaccessible and I started tearing the canvas hose on the snorkel end which feeds air into the box. I stopped there as I wanted to keep everything intact incase I wanted to revert and I took the kit in to my mechanic when I got him to replace some bushings in the front end. In NSW you need an airbox once fitted if you want to be strictly by-the-book (however I've seen several without). My makeshift one has disintegrated, and so I need to look into making/commissioning a new one. Welcome! Great picture and glad to hear you're enjoying the car like so many others on the forum.Keep us updated on the next plans and check out the social meets/track meets.Cheers, Pricey Cheers! Would be keen to get in on the meets!

Boffin Posted 21, November 2016 Author Report Share Posted 21, November 2016 Lovely choice of rims. Thanks! Made the choice to go for 195/55 tyres instead of the usual 50 profiles as they were far closer to the original diameter of the stock wheels and tyres, and I like a beefy sidewall. It changes the overall look of the wheel compared to the usual ones you see on Ph IIs. To be fair it badly needs a drop as it looks a bit rally spec at the moment, but all that is in the pipeline for the future. Welcome. Great choice of car [emoji1303] Thanks! Just had a look at your build - my word, what a little beast! Welcome to OZRS, and congrats on the purchase! My 182 Cup still makes me smile after more than 7 years of ownership Cheers! R182 Posted 21, November 2016 Report Share Posted 21, November 2016 Welcome. First thing I had to do was change the belts too! I've done it twice now on time and think I've only averaged about 10,000km per belt. But peace of mind is valuable to me. Heavens above, I am in danger of hitting that figure in a year's worth of it being my weekender - any particular reason why so frequent? (and thanks ) Welcome! Nice photo. Post up some more. I've got a cupra lip that I've decided not to use. Shoot me a pm if you want to take it off my hands. Thanks! I bit off a bit more than I can chew on that particular shoot - there's an awful lot of compositing, masking and colour correction to make it look like a big money project, but I'll throw a teaser. Oddly enough there aren't too many photos of it on my phone... And PM'd about the lip! Nice brolli One of those uninteresting christmas presents that ends up being quite useful! R182 Posted 22, November 2016 Report Share Posted 22, November 2016 ... any particular reason why so frequent? Well, belts are due every three years (I think, I've lost track, three or four)... anyway, once when I got the car, then again when the time was almost up. Almost because unfortunately, I didn't know to change the water pump the first belt change, so that started leaking before the time was up for the second belt change (sigh). To change a water pump is almost to pull apart as much as required to do the belt, so second belt was done slightly early with the pump.

[emoji13] Gee, and I thought you already knew blokes can't do two things at once... Solution, when talking about cars and if you are doing something else, you need to do the most important thing. That means stopping what you are doing, and talking cars... Sorted!

vaughan Posted 23, November 2016 Report Share Posted 23, November 2016 (edited) The trouble with the water pump is that it's driven by the accessory belt, but it bolts to the block and the cam belt needs to come off to change it. Once the cam belt comes off it needs to be changed and the timing set again. Stock wheels on the 172 are 195/50/15 not 55 profile so you're running a bit big. Stock on 182 and optional on the 172 in the U.K. is either 195/45/16 or 205/45/16 -- not sure which cos I have a 172 with 15s. The 195/50r15 would make the overall diameter a bit too small for my liking, and the 55s make it larger by something insignificant as 2mm or a figure around there. I could of course be wrong, but I can tell you I had a few late nights trying to work out the best tyre size haha. The guys at the tyre shop were also a bit sceptical of my calculations, but lining up the old and current wheel/tyre combos, they lined up pretty bang on. The RE003s have a fairly stiff sidewall and so by other's accounts no turn-in or stability has been lost in the process. EDIT: Ok ok, 5mm - here's the calculator I was using. http://www.etyres.co.uk/how-to-change-your-tyre-size/ I know its not the most popular choice, but I didn't want the wheel change to step out of the 2.5% range... s9810588 Posted 5, December 2016 Report Share Posted 5, December 2016 Nice photo! The sunlight through the trees in the backgroung is epic. BTW 205/50R15 tyre is the closest size to original (less than 1% difference). It meets the load rating requirement too (83).

s9810588 Posted 6, December 2016 Report Share Posted 6, December 2016 He's got a 182. Read his first post. Original tyre size for 182 is 205/45R16.
Boffin Posted 6, December 2016 Author Report Share Posted 6, December 2016 Dang, I had a similar idea but I didn't execute. Thinking back, I really should have suggested it to some of the guys - I didn't bother as I didn't think anyone would be into the idea. Next time! (And cheers again for any tips you gave throughout the day ) Nice photo! The sunlight through the trees in the backgroung is epic. BTW 205/50R15 tyre is the closest size to original (less than 1% difference). It meets the load rating requirement too (83). Yep you're not wrong with any of that. I seem to remember it was a little harder to find the sort of tyre I was after in that particular size (don't quote me on this but I don't think I could find the RE003s in that size), but it was the first one I was trying for before looking at 195/50s and eventually the 55s I ended up with. The price of the was quite a bit of a hike too, especially for any sort of semi decent rubber with comprehensively good reviews. In the end, I rationalised it as the 003s having quite a square profile, so the extra rubber on the edges almost makes up for that CM lost in width. The stock 15 inch on 172s is 195/50/15 -- these are the original tyres. Not the original tyres, not a 182. I covered this in my last reply haha
