Rim Quality Or Tyres Clio Rs 2014

Hi people first post and who better to ask than other Renault owners.

I have a 2014 Clio RS, yes the one with no manual gear box.

Jjust want to know if anyone has had issues with the rims going out of shape?

I have been having a issue of the car waddling at the rear when you roll at lo speed like up to traffic lights.

I took the car to a wheel alignment and suspension place and they said the right rear in particular has a lump in the tyre.

I have the original  Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres and they still have a lot of tread on them and he said not to worry about it.

I had read an article that if the rims are not straight, as in when you look at them front the front they can cause this.

So i jacked the car up and used a pain can and a piece of wood and sure enough all of them have a slight  in / out wobble to them. About 2 - 4mm

I'm super careful not to hit pot holes and drains but the roads in Perth are terrible.

Has anyone else come across this?

Cheers

Crinkle

Hi mate

In/out "wobble" i think you are really referring to toe-in or toe-out, which is common to just about every car on sale, either due to design or suspension tolerances.

I would recommend you go to another tyre/ suspension place. A) the can give you the actual toe-in/ toe-out and B) what on earth is a "lump" in the rubber? A bulge in the sidewall? If so, that tyres needs replacing asap. If not, I have no idea what that means and you should get a second opinion.

How are you actually detecting the wobble?  Are you lining the wood up with the tyre or rim while spinning the wheels?

I am assuming it's the rim as no tyre is going to measure exactly the same all the way around.when being spun.

I doubt that all of them would be buckled in some way especially if you bought the car new. In any case you need to get another tyre or wheel specialist to check it out in my view.

I doubt that a lump in a rear tyre would make the wheel out of balance to the extent that it would 'waddle'.  Do you put around 30 to 32 psi in the rear tyres?

Hey thanks for the reply's.

Stromlo - the suspension place was great and I don't think it's a toe in or out issue the tyre wear is even. I asked them for a 4 wheel alignment and they told me the only issue with the suspension was the front alignment which was barely out. They could have been bastards and try'd to sell me a whole rear suspension.

Timster - I had rashed a rim, well more slid down the curb and had damage the  black paint job. I bought another rim from renault as they don't come with a spare which did come in handy later when I got a flat. Even the new rim and tyre has a slight lateral warp to it now. I now use the repainted one as a spare.

Chris043 - I line up the wood on paint can with the rim to check the lateral warp. I put the recommended 30psi Like it says on the door of the car.

I read this article  http://www.tirereview.com/diagnosing-vibration-issues/   which makes me think it's the rims and tyres.

There is a slight vibration at speed 80km/h or more.

Thanks for the advice. I try another tyre place and get them to check them out.

I hoping someone my have had a similar issue so i could fix it on the cheap.

It is possible for tyres to have the belts de-laminate.  This is especially common in very hot climates and if travelling at high speeds.  I had this issue once before in a Jeep Grand Cherokee on its original OEM Khumo tyres that had about 15000kms on them.  They were three years old at the time, so similar timeframes to your vehicle it seems.

One went out of round and over the course of a day while travelling up the Stuart Highway (were perfect order before I started the trip - even had them checked before departing on the 3500km jaunt), and degenerated from a slight wobble at slow speeds at the rear (just as you describe), to a full on vibration through the cabin.  I changed the wheel to the silly space saver spare and continued to Darwin (at snail pace relatively speaking) where I had to replace all four tyres as the other three had started to delaminate as well by then.  It was summer and the ambient temps were in the order of 40 degrees C, and obviously the extended travelling up the Stuart Highway at ... erm... 130km/hr...  generated sufficient heat in the tyres to deliminate the belts.

Have the tyres checked is my suggestion, as you may have a belt delamination failure in its early stages.  If one has gone, the others may be not far away from being the same.

I think I need to do some re-reading, I put more air in my tyres than 30psi  :clown: More like 34-35!

The details on the drivers door says 34 psi front and 30 psi back but I always add about 2 or 3 psi to allow for tyre heat by the time I get to the servo

The tread is not coming away from the tyres but there could be damage to the belt I guess.

If the tyres weren't so expensive I would just change them all.

I have heard of people putting 38-40psi not to damage the rims.

Haven't heard of anyone increasing tyre pressure to that extent to preserve rims.

Obviously tyre pressure is often increased for track work.

If it turns out to be rim problems it should be rectified under warranty.  Tyres of course are a different story....hope you get it sorted.

She not under warranty any more. They only had 3 years when I bought the car, not 5 like they do now.

If it doesn't turn out to be the tires I will get some good after market rims.

Apparently some forum members here who only had a 3 year warranty for their early 2014 Clios complained to their Renault dealer and it was extended to 5 years like the warranties after June, 2014.  Might be worth a try before you go any further.
