New Member - Shopping For An Rs250

Hi All,

Been reading up in the last few days in the classifieds and "things to watch out for" threads as I am looking around for an RS250 to buy. Looking forward to utilising what looks like a great and active community on here!

I am eyeing off a Queensland car, and am based in Adelaide - does anyone have any tips on ideal people or businesses to approach for a PPI or similar?

Hi James

Welcome. Is PPI pre purchase inspection? If so, in Sydney Renotech or Paul V at AP automotive, Melbourne: Virage automotive. Queensland, might just have to rely on help from members up there who are very helpful and friendly. And know crap-loads about cars and Renaultsports in particular. I recommend offering beer and assorted goods in payment.

Essentially I would be happy to suggest pretty much anything in the classifieds section. This forum seems to attract the OCD that is helpful when it comes to looking after cars. There are some very good deals there too.

It's also good to know that they are very well built cars (maybe not so much the pa ne lg a p s and interior) and they go for miles. Not typical of every Renault built at the time as they are made by Renaultsport in Dieppe which makes a big difference. Sorry if you already know this but I found it very reassuring.

It's also good to look through the thread called something like "non forum member RS's advertised online" (this http://www.ozrenaultsport.com/index.php?/topic/16307-Rs-Cars-Seen-Advertised-Online-(Non-Members)) as many have been inspected/investigated and there are one or two very nasty surprises out there!

Anyway, I wish you all the best in your shopping travels!

Feel free to post links to cars you're interested in too, people can eyeball them and give you their 2c on them. Also if they're well known good or bad cars they can let you know.

Hey James - Funnily enough I went through this exact process with a vehicle in QLD, as I'm in NSW.

I used State Roads for the independent inspection and they were excellent!

Report was extensive with about 30+ photos.

The inspector spoke with me on the phone for over 20 minutes.

They offer a guarantee on their work and few offer this so I'd consider this as a point of differentiation.

The report cost me $250 and I didn't buy the car because of this and ended up buying something within my own state.

Personally, I wouldn't buy out of state unless it was a game changer, too much hassle.

Key Point in QLD: Cars DON'T have to be inspected for roadworthy each year!

Cheers!

Why are you looking in Queensland when there's two LY 8.08s owned by members for sale in SA?

Just curious...

Hi James,

Welcome to the fold. I can't recommend a good appraisal service up here but if you want a local forum member to pre-appraise anything for you before committing money then I'm sure one of us could help out. I'm happy to do so (time/location dependant) on the understanding I'm not a mechanic and would just give you a 'worth it/not worth it' call for an appraisal - ie inspect & general report on the car inside and out, test drive, feedback on vendor and review of service history etc. Just sing out if you need any help.

Good luck,

Rory

Hi All,

First of all - what an awesome response! Both in volume and in value, thanks :)

chuckovski - great info on the resources in Vic and NSW, thanks. I've been eyeing off this one: https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Renault-Megane-2011/SSE-AD-4396758/?Cr=2

because it ticks the boxes of having recaros, I quite like the colour combo and the price looks good too. Not being able to see it in person is a big drawback which is why I've held off so far.

RS250CUP - sage advice - I'd ideally avoid buying interstate but the choice is not amazing here. There are a couple of good cars but ultimately out of my budget. I'll see how patient I can be...

speedfiend - the 808's look great (I test drove one of them) but are ultimately out of my budget, unfortunately!

Rory - thanks! Incredibly generous offer. I'll assess my options before asking anyone to give up their own time but incredible that you'd make the offer to someone completely unknown to you!

acidwestern/ghettogolfer - probably would have bought it already if it had recaros.. ha. Yellow was never on my radar but it does look fantastic. I could get over being a bit "loud" :P

Hi James,

I can offer you an appraisal of this vehicle as I looked at it back in January when I was still searching.

The seller is a nice guy, very accomodating and seems to be genuine. What he wasn't at the time was entirely honest. Prior to his ad being updated the vehicle was listed as "immaculate" and was asking around 20k.

I test drove the car and it drove well - better than a similarly aged AGP that I was interested in.

What the seller didn't mention until I was there was the sizeable "shopping trolley" damage to the rear left bumper that had been repaired poorly (bad paint matching and rough finish), the front splitter that was so broken it would need replacing, the gaps in the service history and that he hadn't replaced the speedo needle under the factory recall (you can't see the needle against the background markings in daylight).

I left thinking I'd been a bit misled and wondered what else wasn't being offered upfront.

Good luck in your search.

Thanks for that - useful and much appreciated information! It's a shame that people prefer to hide issues when all they do is make you feel there could be more hidden that they've decided not to disclose...
