About To Take The Dive Into Rs Ownership

Thanks Shifu for showing me the light, well one foot was in the tub already, he just gave me the necessary shove to get the rest of the way in.

Megane RS 265 is what I am aiming for. Wifey has given it the nod, so now begins the shopping!

Only thing is that the car must have Sat Nav and Leather seats (have two grubby boys that are 3 and 5 years of age, and may be considered weapons of mass destruction in certain circles)

Based in Melbourne.

Talk about a dizzying line up with overlapping options between models! Its forcing me to trawl through EVERY ad - which isn't a bad thing.

Yeah I rue the day I thought I could get on top of the model nomenclature and what it actually meant.

The cool thing is that dealers often make mistakes. Safetyman got a trophy+ with Recaros for the price of a cup. Half made up for his trade in price...

The only option is recommend is the active bixenon headlights. They are bloody fantastic, but I think they're only on trophy+ and rb8 models. They meet your requirements.

Also on the 8.08 but that doesn't have sat nav.

It's in liquid yellow though...

Welcome to the forum and good choice. I suggest you narrow down leather seats to leather Recaros to make the decision making (and fun factor) better. Good luck making sense of the nomenclature between models on 265s. 275s a little easier.

There are a few threads on here to help (or add confusion... ????) work out what's what. Later 265s and 275s have 5year warranty so that may be work looking into as well.

Oh, and 275s don't have the Xenons on any model I understand, but Trophy variants (275) have the akro exhaust which is a good thing.

Whilst I love the look of the yellow, I have always liked Black, white or silver cars. I am wired funny though.

The recaros are a manually adjusted bucket seat right? Living in Melbourne, I love my heated seats in winter, and happy to trade the boy racer look, for some added warmth during the colder months!

The 5 year warranty thing is a serious consideration for me considering the horror stories I am reading with all the engine related mount and bolt shearing issues too.

Knowing my luck if I bought a sold-prior-to July 2014 model, a bolt may shear and drop right through chassis on me!

One omission in the cabin that kinda bugs me is the lack of a cup holder. Yes, it is minor, but it does bug me.

Had mine almost three years - approaching 40k and perfectly reliable. Not even a squeak or rattle. They're much better than the mark 2's.

Yes, a cup holder would be nice, but having grown up in Escort RS2000's, I'm still finding electric windows a novelty.

You'll be right.

Sweet MV Agusta there mate - my other ride is a Street Triple, and they don't come with cup holders either!

I'd suggest normal seats if you'll have kids in the back.

There are horror stories of all cars out there, I wouldn't worry about engine mounts etc. AK had one fail, but didn't continue to drive it, Renotech fixed it, and it's all good. If you're really worried just replace them with upgrades.

BTW what's your budget? Some of us have nothing better to do other than trawl carsales all day :)

hmm how long is a piece of string? Wifey has ok'd up to $45k - which would bring me into Golf GTI et al territory.

Trying to avoid this spectrum because at that price point, the other options would make a more "sensible" daily driver choice, with some compromise compared the narrowly focused Megane.

$25-32k would be about my sweet spot I reckon!

You can get some great Megane IIIs for that range.

There's an rb8 that's cheap but was a write off or something.

If you're super keen to buy a new one I wouldn't shy away from offering 45 for a 275 premium as they're 49 drive away at the moment (awesome value). You'll definitely get a demo though at that price.

However I think given how surprisingly reliable they are, a 1-2yo car in your preferred range would be the best choice.

I'll keep an eye out!

Buy Sammi's 8.08 in liquid yellow. It's here in Adelaide, he's just loaded a Stage 1 tune and it's absolutely immaculate. Low km too.

265 cup arrived today...very happy with initial purchase. Low ks 2 year old...I looked for 3 months & used racq master check several times. Thoroughly recommend for any vehicle, even with a dealer. An rb8 listed with a dealer failed a roadworthy when checked...Good luck.

Yup - I have already had a stern talking to that this car is not strictly mine only, and that she will take it out on occasions.....

Mind you she can back a trailer better than I can as well, but I cook betterer (there should be such a real word) and she's quite handy with the stick.

Yeah I kinda went in a little blind and started negotiating and stuff without fully appreciating the myriad of options and model specific trim and specs.

The I had to learn all the OzRS specific abbreviations, nomenclatures and vocabulary in such a short time as well, I felt my head was going to split from the confusion of information!

Glad I landed the recaros, however in conducting further research for a discreet ICE install, I have now found out that I cannot mount a small/mid sized amp under the driver's or passenger's seats. I need my bass so a boxed subby simply will not do.

But, f*ggit, I am getting an RS!!!!!!

I buy a black car every 10 years. That's about how long it takes me to forget what a nightmare the last one was. Next one is due in 2021.

Well I have had the current black car for 7 years now, however, I am also quite obtuse and never learn.

Admittedly, the first RS 250 that I laid my eyes upon and made me fall in love with the shape was black and kinda glad in a stupid way that I ended up getting black, a-gain....

Do you mean a powered sub or a separate amp/box setup?

I've seen some clever hidy holes for amps.

Separate amp and sub set up. Have done some searching and found that Rockford Fosgate make a tiny 4ch amp and not too pricey.

Was thinking of powering upgraded door speakers (components with dash mounted tweeters) with 2ch and bridging the other two to drive a shallow mount sub of some sort.

Considering the size of the RF amp, i think i have plenty of mounting options however the sub still has me head scratching. Maybe a falsefloor in the boot but would also like to keep the spare wheel.

A class D amp should fit under the seat. I've got one under my Recaro's. I can't imagine the floor space under the seat is too different in the Meg compared to the Clio. Marine and motorbike audio gear is compact, should see a few options on ebay.

The spare wheel well is huge. A space saver spare will allow ample room for a 10" sub.

^^^

Do you have a cross bar front and rear on your recaros?

The cross bars stop my seat sliding forward and back for rear seat access.

I'm already have a small alpine boxed sub that's relatively unobtrusive and I'll put my two amps in the spare wheel well, in an "upright slot/cassette" type of arrangement.

Otherwise there's the access panel to the tail lights on either side where I've seen small D amps hidden away in.

Just one on the front it seems...

IMG_2149_zpssjvzzapc.jpg

I thought it was more of a supporting bar?

The seat rail has a latch from the rear seat leg of the Recaro to prevent the sliding on mine. I slid the seat back and the bar wouldn't clear my fingers resting on the amp, maybe 5mm of clearance from the bar to the amp.

That amp pictured is an Arc unit which is now discontinued. Replacement model is the Arc Audio XDi 450.4 which is 5mm shorter in height.

The tail light access hatch is a neat spot. The rear speaker cavity has lots of room as well.

The under seat option is a little risky if there are little ones to cart around.

Drink spillage can happen when cornering like one does in an RS...a no open food or drinks policy in the car becomes the next topic of conversation :)

No drinks and food!!!!

Will check out the clearance under the seats and the spare wheel well on Tuesday.

Coming from the Mazda 3 SP25 with the Bose system, I can't take that big a step backwards. I spend about 90% of the time driving alone and like my music loud. Im no audiophile because that costs good money but i am quite partial to thumping base in my RnB, EDM and some Metal.

Mandatory in our family. Not even a topic of discussion.... had to get the Trophy R to extend that to no kids either (plural at least...)... ????

The Arc Audio XDi 450.4 is 53mm in height for reference.

Agreed, there's nothing like some low end bump from a stereo :)

The Arc Audio XDi seems like a serious bit of kit. Thanks for the recommendation - been about 9 years since I did my own ICE install and products on the market has changed a bit since then!

Do you know of an Australian supplier? My google search has only revealed US based retailers (admittedly this was a cursory 5 min search after reading some reviews).

It's a neat little unit, the 2 I've purchased (for separate cars) were both from eBay shipped from the U.S. Sorry, I'm unsure of local distributors.
