Open Road = too slow for driving at the cars potential. Plan to get to Sydney on August 31, pay your money quick-quick for the Wakefield park track day. After that, roll on home satisfied with at least a few hours of WOT and no speed-limits other than those imposed by your own driving skills. IE Turn right before Bairnsdale and head through the alps via Mt Hotham. Then Bright, Oxley, Whitfield, Mansfield, Marysville, Healesville. It's the long way but... Not in winter though. I've done a few trips north in a Clio, Brissy, Emerald and Moranbah, best fun (and time) was Moranbah heading home, first 1000km in 8hrs. Toowoomba to Gilgandra at night was fun once, three of us partly then just two, changing the lead car, hammering it. Sorry, bad influence, shortest route, day time only and drive safely. I thought there might be a main road or highway that is open near the alps. Experience the alps without going over them i guess..Night time equals kangaroos too. Not the kind of experience you are seeking I'm sure...Yep planning on going early morning but not to early and pulling up stumps prior to dusk. At this stage thinking of taking the Hume then up the Pacific, bypassing Sydney. Maybe detour when Im closer to the QLD border. The Hume is BORING. That route I recommend is really good. Especially if the weather is clear. You will see the snow on the hill tops. There's some great driving roads too. If you read Ace's thread on his BO Clio he bought from me and his journey back to Sydney, it gives a good description of the route to take (again in reverse order). Some fantastic roads in there, arguably some of the best in Aus. These drop you out in Norrhern NSW where you can continue the fun home via the border ranges. One extra day for driving will be great but isn't much, so you'd have to choose wisely. As Jason suggested the reverse-Ace (Eca?) route would be great, however since you're around the alpine area VIC-NSW you'd be crazy not doing some of the roads around there too as Andrew suggested. That leaves almost the whole of NSW on highway, but you could then do the Galston Gorge to Wisemans Ferry then over to Peats Ridge. But each of these diversions is going to add to the length of the drive. My experience driving to Brisbane in January was traffic jam from the QLD border up. I found that the uphill sections it would indicate 12-13L/100km, then downhill much less, and normal driving around 8. Hopefully that gives you a guide. The roads aren't freeway but they seem quicker than the Gold Coast motorway since these days the old roads are pretty deserted. Many parts have classic corners, crests and dips for driving enjoyment. What about the fun police on these back roads around the Victorian alps and NSW northern section.. are they around and are there many speed cameras. I noticed in country towns that police now seem to drive dark-blue ford territories.This happened to me the last trip at a coffee stops when I said Hello to them in full uniform and can't remember seeing their car in the carpark coming in and I'm thinking to myself 'wtf what are they driving?'. So assume they are there just always there hiding in plain sight. So try not to do the wrong thing because it is a big financial machine they are running and it's easier just to stay within the limits, keep your license and blah blah blah blah blah. [go to the track if you want to speed]. Much of the mid north coast run is currently 80kmh on the multi-billion $$ pacific hwy. I think from memory that starts at about Taree at the moment and continues to about 100km south Ballina. I'd consider avoiding that part for sure. Awesome roads there for testing the Clio and still not risking a Licence. Not risking too much anyway as very twisty in spots. Perfect!! Hint: no speed cameras in the twisties as a rule... And that is where the fun is. Any idiot can drive fast in a straight line, so they deserve to be fined if speeding on the long straights. As No152 says above, in the best sections of road the biggest problem is the car in front slowing you down. Current forecast is for snow. I suggest that if you want to have a great drive and not go too far out of the way, you can come here to Albury and follow the signs to the Hume Weir, past the airport, and then take the turn to Corryong. Go over the Bethanga Bridge and follow the Murray River to Jingelic. Go from there back to the Hume Hwy via Holbrook and continue on to Windsor. Then take the Putty Road to Singleton and up the New England Hwy to Tamworth. Down the Oxley to Port Macquarie. Up the Pacific Hwy to Coffs Harbour, then the Coramba road to Grafton. Turn left and go up the Gwyder Hwy to Glen Innes back onto the New England Hwy through to Brisbane. Fantastic 3 day drive IMO. Looking like a lot of motorway driving but you'd really need 5+ days to do the whole trip off motorways Can I make a suggestion though? You should head to Dungog after the Putty. It doesn't take a great deal of extra time and is a nice warm down after the Putty before you get ready for the Motorway again. Dungog is an extra hour (you'll do it faster because its twisties) but well worth it. The only other suggestion is a detour via Penrith/Emu Plains on your way to Windsor. I've got you leaving the Motorway near Mittagong and heading through the back roads. According to Google the time penalty is only about 20 minutes but I usually find that way is just faster because its all back roads which allow a RS to travel full posted speed in all areas. Looks like I'm free on Friday too. I guess you're hitting Sydney late morning. We can meet up and head to the half way house Cafe on the Putty road for lunch.
