New Rs Candidate

Drove home for 1.5 hrs, 1 in traffic and 30mins open road hwy. is good, clutch not too heavy, suspension well sorted. Needs a wheel alignment as when the did the tie rods and bushes they didn't do another alignment. Also when the clutch wears I'll be getting rid of that dual mass fly wheel, the revs are not responsive enough for me. Overall I am very very impressed and love it.

I've also named it... Well wife did...

It's now known as Sir Mix-A-Lot

To slightly derail for a moment, I'd be interested in knowing if the SMF feels any different to the dual-mass. I'm getting the 'check emissions' error come up every time I give the car any spirited gearing-down, so at least once a week. Additionally, I have a screech whilst riding the clutch in traffic. These things annoy me more than I thought they would. Anyway, that's just me - carry on!

Milltek and K-tec make the best sounding exhausts IMO but not cheap to get. At least 1100 landed plus fitting. I assume the whistle you are referring to is the noise from he resonator? Some people get a res delete on 250/265/275 for more noise, I haven't read much about it on 225 but may also be a cheaper option.

I believe an inoxline custom exhaust is possible for similar coin. I don't know anything about them though, others here can tell you. Exchange rate is a killer atm too!

Do you have to pull bits of the dash out to fit the aux cable? Something I should look into perhaps.

Was thinking local fabricators could knock up an exhaust easily. The meg doesn't look to have any complicated bends or anything like that, will eliminate the back box, run a single high flow cat and maybe one silencer in the centre and should be good.

Regarding the Aux cable, it will be a head unit out job then plug the cable in and re-install. I have a 6 disc changer as well so I think I'll pull the Aux cable through the centre and bring it out in the centre console. Or I'll split it into two and have one in console and on in front of the cup holders.

Shouldn't need to pull dash apart although I haven't had a proper look yet.

Yeah I think you're right, not sure if anyone on here has gone down that route but there definitely seem to be a few custom jobs in the UK. You'll definitely need one silencer, mine previously had a muffler delete and now has a non-res s/s system, both are quite loud.

Ah ok, I may stick to my old school cd changer for now and replace the whole head unit at some point (if I can be bothered... Currently more interested in listening to the exhaust hehe)

I suggest looking into the price comparisons between the known "brands" versus the custom concept.  At least when you get the Miltek or K Tec items, they are a known entity, with known attributes when doing other mods, plus they have some benefit at sale time as a known thing rather than being some one-off custom that nobody potentially places any "mod" value on.

Just a different perspective on the comparison.

Good luck with your choices, look forward to following the journey.

hi Folks

I found a megane 225 registered under tassie but the car currently at wollongong, I've arranged with the owner to inspect the car tomorrow.

Here's some photos of the cars, and I believe it is ph1 none cup version.

owned by an older bloke the car has done 126kms on it, according to the owner the car has only been serviced by Renault server centre in Hobart and an independent mechanic specialise in euro car.

I rang up Hobart renault but they won't tell me the car history details due to privacy, then I rang the independent mechanic and the guy told me the car is in a very good condition no oil leaks, only things required attention is the right side engine mount but not critical, he didn't mentioned anything about the belt.

I then engaged with a mechanic in Wollongong for pre purchase inspection and the mechanic feedback all positive (he was surprise how how well the car drive, handling and fast in fact he told me if i decided not to get it he will be interested ), he  spotted a very minor oil leaks but nothing serious he said don't even have to worry about it.

Owner asking price 6k, I probably have to change the timing belt since I don't know when was last it got change.

what do you guys think? is it a good buy? I'm quite keen with this one.

let me know your thoughts. thanks.

The carfacts history (available on Carsales for about $25) is not bad as it tells you all the times the car is known to have changed hands. Otherwise PPSR is about $4? (just tells you if stolen or financed)

Btw 6K is cheap (if it's mechanically OK) as it actually looks like a Cup to me. Orange belts, projector (xenon?) lights, multi-spoke wheel design, sits low-ish, and has cross-drilled rotors. Possible to get a Non-Cup to this spec, but it certainly looks like a Cup. If you want, two more things you can check: i) get close to a rear wheel with a torch, look for Eibach marked on the springs. ii) turn off traction control and see if it comes back on at 50kph.

according to the mechanic guy the log book look consistent service, had a service done 2 months ago.

I'm only guessing it is a non cup because it is cheap compare with cup version on carsales. I asked the owner but he doesn't know about it he also told me it is a german made car.

will definitely try checking what you suggested.

what else should i be looking tomorrow when on site?

LOL!

Mine was also purchase from a non-enthusiast.

Sorry, I'm useless with mechanical things, I insist on cars I buy getting inspected by a specialist mechanic. Others here will be more helpful!

Sounds like a bargain, buy it !!

If it has been serviced by renault it will have the service logs completed. You will be able to tell from this what has been done and when the belts are due....

First photo shows cross drilled rotors. Phase 1 Cups had body coloured mirrors, the anthracite came on Phase 2. Brembos no one can work out, my Phase 2 Cup has silver brembos, I think front only as well. Like I said, could be modified to look like it, but seems unlikely

Yeah it's weird as only the rear look cross drilled but they may be really glazed disks reflecting the rear of the spokes of the wheels.

These bloody French like to keep everyone guessing.

Scratch the reflection theory, just adjusted brightness on my phone and you can see the holes lol

so my fellow Renault brothers, guess who joined the family :)

yes, I drove the car back on Saturday, sorry for the late update as i was busy playing with my new toy.

couldn't get the owner to dropped the price as he's quite firm with 6k.

I'm surprise for 6k I'm getting a lot from the car, what a amazing car.

I still can't work out if it is cup or non cup but the suspension is quite stiff compare to my brother elentra, girl friend yaris and my starlet.

took it for a drive yesterday, as this car is hard to see in canberra when i was on the road i get bit of attention, probably because of the big rear ass.

the only things with the car is i can heard few rattle and noises from the desk board, and the door handle paints is fading,  any tips how to DIY my self?

Welcome!

I believe your car is a Cup. Try switching off traction and see if it comes back on at 50kph.

If there are a lot of vibrations and rattles, you may need new engine mounts. Approximately $600 to have OEM ones installed including parts - uprated ones are available (Vibratechnics / K-tec Racing) but the jury is out on whether they are a good or bad thing. Engine mounts on this model typically last 40-50K kms.

but when i'm ready what would you suggest for me to begin 1st?

the vibrations and rattles only can hear when i start the engine, once start driving i won't hear them.

so you think I need engine mounts urgently?

I've done door handles!

All you need is masking tape, a can of paint and a can of clear coat.

I'd give it 2 or 3 coats of paint followed by 4 or 5 coats of clear coat. They come up great.

Well i guess if the tyres and the pads are all in good shape, I'm sure an exhaust wouldn't hurt? :D

Should be easy enough for a mechanic to tell you if mounts are needed, it's obvious if they are.

The only thing an exhaust hurts is your wallet! Trust me on this, if the stock system is in OK shape, and you just want some noise, get a muffler delete... keep the whistle and get pops and bangs on overrun. My original system rusted out so I went for stainless steel, but it wasn't cheap!

hey guys,

hasn't been good start with the meggy, on weekend take it to bob jane cause front left tyre detected puncture by the computer.

and was told there is a cracked on the edge of the rim, and they can't fix it.

send me to welding shop to weld the rim, then i been reading on internet it seems alloy wheel cannot be repair.

bob jane told me to get it replace by renault it cost me over 1K, and i really can't afford that now

then been looking on wrecking site, couldn't find one.

Looks like im really stuffed...

i'm taking down to a wheel shop tomorrow see if they can do something to it.

i think the welding option might depend on where the crack is.  a few years ago i bought a set of rims and one of them was repaired when i got them. weld lasted 18 months before it opened up and i had to pay $100 to re-weld it. lasted a few more years then i sold the car

$1000 for one wheel? You could easily get a full set of 2nd hand factory jobs with tyres for that if you shopped around and bargained hard!

I got a full set of Audi RS 18's for my Skoda for $400 with sh*t Chinese tyres but the wheels were easily worth 5-6 times what I payed. Guy just wanted them gone fast.
