New Rs Candidate

Hey everyone,

I've been reading a fair bit on here for a little while and decided the time is now to get into a 225RS.

I've come from a Lada Niva, to a falcon, to a very rare Mazda Familia GTAe, to a R32 GTR VSpec2 to my current ride a Skoda Octavia. The Skoda is great but I need something a little more involving to drive again plus being a DSG I no longer have an oversized left leg

One big thing for me is I have not really been able to do a lot of the work on my Skoda because there is no way to jack the front or rear of the car up with a trolley jack, you need ramps (yuck), the "widow maker" jack for corner at a time wheel rotations, or a hoist. I want a car I can work on again!!!

I'm currently eyeing off this one

https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Renault-Megane-2006/SSE-AD-3574753

The KM are a bit higher than some others but the price is right at the moment.

I can do all the small maintenance jobs myself so that's not an issue but having never worked on or owned a French car I'm coming here with questions as to what to look out for and if this is a good buy (it seems so)

Thanks and hopefully be in this thing by next week if all pans out well!!

Hi and welcome mate.

You probably already know this but the big ticket items for a car of that age and Kms would be the following.

 - Has the timing belt being done? 4yrs or 100k if i remember correctly.

 - Aux belt (Usually done same time as timing belt) If these two have not been done recently or atleast within last 12 months i would be worried.

 - has it had a well serviced history, more importantly who has worked on it?

 - Engine mounts are common maintenance items make sure to do some take off and breaking to ensure there is no harshness or knocks etc...

 - the usual stuff oil leaks condition of clutch and gearbox

Others who have owned this type of RS will be able to chime in but hopefully the above helps.

Cheers

Sam

Thanks Sam.

Owner stated its always been serviced by him at a specialist. The last service looks to be done by Virage as the sticker on the windscreen states.

I've asked him about the cam belt but they are no biggie to swap out (unless the megane is particularly harder than most cars).

Oil leaks should be covered under Roadworthy certificate in Victoria but I will still check.

Didn't think about the engine mounts.

Clutch will be interesting as I've been out of a manual for about 4 years now but I know the usual checks for that sort of thing from buying jap imports with no history at all.

Apart from all this I did want to know the differences between the standard 225 and the Cup.

There is also another one in Vic for $6000 but it's had an engine change so I'm not too keen on that.

Thanks again

yeah from what i understand there is a bit to changing the timing belt on a F4RT engine.

you have to have the right tools in order to lock the cams in place etc. If you have done others then you could do it yourself.

as for the clutch i've always been taught to take off in 2nd or even 3rd to see how the bite is and to also check how high the clutch bite is.

others might be more informative on that one.

One thing i always do is ask the seller to take me for a drive in the car for atleast 10mins to observe how he treats it as that can sometimes give clues to the life of the vehicle.

the main difference is suspension as the cup has a stiffer chassis and so handles a little bit better.

I'm not from Victoria but from what i understand Virage is a great workshop and a few members are customers, there is also auto paris.

NSW seem to have the best Renault specialists with paul V and the Renault whisperers Renotech.

cheers

Sam.

I've just seen this one --> http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/isabella-plains/cars-vans-utes/2006-megane-225-f1-edition-2-0l-turbo/1093236142

that is one hell of a Price considering the car!!! and 12k less in kms! and being limited edition means there have only been 30 or so brought into the country.

Be aware that a few people have had the services/book stamped for the timing belt interval but didn't do the actual belt.

For example mine will get the belt at about 20-25000km at 4 years. Belt itself won't have any issues at that age. A lot of low-km RS will have the same thing and to trim the cost. Not doing the belt for another year means a year to sell the car.

So check receipts or call the workshop and get the records checked.

Hahahaa yeah I do miss it though, was very fun off-road and great for a first car as I learned a lot about fixing engines from it.

You know in the owners manual there is a section that shows how to change the oil on side of the road without a jack. You put the spare in the passenger window then tip the car on its side resting on the tyre lol!!!!

GTR was nice but by far the best was the Mazda. Full factory rally spec 220awkw and 1070kg made for a very fast car! Owned it for 11 years then sold it to buy a house. One day I'll have another.

Is this the cup version?

i will do pre-purchase vehicle inspection  if I'm getting the car, do you guys suggest i should take it to renault mechanic or normal mechanic can do the inspection work

I think the seller is a member here -

http://www.ozrenaultsport.com/index.php?/topic/24574-vic-2006-rs-megane-ph2-sport-cup-for-sale/?fromsearch=1

Seemed pretty desperate to sell on financial grounds back then.

Good luck, so much car for the money, and definitely the best colour :P

I started off looking for a black one, ended up with silver and then had a brief opportunity to get into a black one with lower miles and in better nick - but couldn't bring myself to do it, the silver had grown on me too much!

Yep that's the one! He's not sure when cam belt was done last so that's an extra expense I'd have to think about. Also the RWC isn't current.

I called and spoke to him tonight, seems a nice guy and sounded honest to me. Said its not perfect but it's pretty good.

Curious about this one too

http://www.alpineaffaire.com.au/2006-megane-sport-225-team-f1-3-door-manual-hatch-uie092-109602km/#

But price may be a little high. Wonder if there's any wiggle room from them

Re: engine mounts, this is a known problem with this model, the OEM ones last about 40-50K km, then they're buggered. Uprated ones are available, I believe there is a slight cabin vibration penalty. Carl from Virage can source non-badged OEM ones quite cheap, I think.

Re: pre-purchase inspection, definitely go with a Renault specialist. They know what to look for. Carl charged me fifty bucks only.

Hey bro!!

Welcome to the forum... You will learn that I talk a lot of crap/BS/VL turbo garbage.

However this evening I have had a couple of drinks and have actually read the thread before commenting.

Mate... Familia GTA... Very cool car indeed.. Bit of a lead tipped arrow I thought? Like a GTIR??

I haven't driven many and/east west engine jap cars.

Is your Octavia a RS? Please tell me it's a wagon and its manual.....

I am a Clio man through and through but that meggy you are looking at looks mint... Why the change from the skoda though... Unless your skoda is a skoda Rapide (or what eva those things are called)

You really cannot go past RenaultSports models for value(performance)/money .... Honestly... What else can you buy for less than 10k that has grunt, safety, goes round corners, has space for birds/and kids and is a little bit quickly.

Anyway... I am on couch (blind) watching Chris Harris videos and having to get up to work in few hours.

Log story short... You are privileged I have posted in your thread, but an RS (RenaultSport).............. Clio are mad but yes meganes Re practical...

But you have the following skoda... Octavia Rs wagon (hopefully it is APR tuned stage 2, dsg tune, dump pipe, decat, cat back, eibac springs and spacers, APR carbon airbox. Solid engine, gearbox mounts and roof racks for my missus bike)

Then keep it and buy a Clio 172 for fun cause they are cheap.

Peace out... Buddy

Hahahaaa!!

Drive a GTiR and the familia is a million times better!

Hand built motor, shot peened close ratio gearbox, squeeze cast Pistons, hollow cam shafts, no aircon, no radio, no leather to save weight. Any way.

I have a Skoda Octavia 118tsi 7spd DSG, wifey has one too but it's too soft for me so hence the change.

I like the Clio but a bit too small for me which is why I'm looking at the Meg.

The grey one owner is interstate at the moment but I'll be looking at it as soon as he gets back unless something better comes up before that.

The one in ACT is a little bit too rough for me which is unfortunate as I love the F1 and the blue.

The wait/search continues

I've emailed the ACT owner and try calling him but no luck reaching him.

did you check with the owner when was the timing belt and engine mount changed the last time and is it due soon?

I like the blood orange, awesome colour.

It all depends on the reason for the engine IMO and also the condition of other parts.

Might be worth atleast further investigation and who knows might be able to knock another $1000 off the price :)

Hello and welcome hitman, you have come to right place!

Straight off the bat I would tend to agree somewhat with Buddy's comments... If you want something to have fun in, you can't really go past a 172/182 for the money. As you can see from my cars list below I've owned the cars in question (and loved them all). The Megane's have a different vibe to the Clio, being more 'mature' more of the time (still encourage you to drive enthusiastically everywhere though haha). The Meggy's are certainly awesome fun, and no doubt quicker, but you have to drive them rather quick before you feel like you're even making the car work when compared to the Clio, which is lively from 40km/h all the way up track speeds. I'd also point out that you can fit a lot in the Clio, so don't be too put off by the small external dimensions. With rear seats in you can get 5 people in there no worries, with them out I can fit two mountain bikes in no worries with only the front wheel removed. I'd strongly suggest you drive a few of each before settling on one.

In regards to the cars mentioned above, I'd be pursuing the F1 for sure. It looks in good nick (as much as one can tell from those few pics), and they look mint in the flesh :) It has an aftermarket exhaust too, so maybe some other goodies... If you can stretch for an R26, well worth considering too, the diff makes a BIG difference if you want to drive it seriously, or anywhere near a track...

As for maintenance stuff, the timing belt change is definitely trickier than most things. The cams/crank are not keyed, so there is very specific tools and processes to get the timing spot on. Allow $1000+ to have it done properly, or plenty of time if you want to have a crack yourself. Other jobs (oil change, thermostat, brake pads etc) are pretty typical, engine mounts do wear quickly but you can change a full set in an hour or two and they aren't too costly. Mods wise, high flow cat and a remap are where the gains are, but the dump pipe (cat is built into it) change is a serious job. Allow $800+ in labour (unless you get mates rates somewhere) to have that swapped out.

Good luck with the search anyhow :)

Have acces last to a full workshop and good mate is a Porsche specialist who has customers with F1's so I'm good for tools too plus I trust him with my cars.

The Clio is not on the cards this time. I prefer the Meg.

R26 are nice but for the cash I have at the moment they are just out of reach.

I'm getting minimal for mine to get rid of it fast then buying a larger SUV for wife then I'll sell her car privately and possibly will be able to get an F1 or a nicer 225

Oh and thanks everyone for the warm welcome and the assistance..

MikeC90

The blue F1 is not in the greatest condition. The pics hide a lot, the video walk around he sent me shows a lot of chips on front bumper and side panels on both sides,

The interior is missing parts of trim, had big scratches in the door cards, carpet on driver side is torn through to the insulation foam underneath and the drivers seat is sagging quite bad, it's also quite dirty.

Hot Tip, clean your car if you're selling it.

Guy in ACT just messaged me. He's a really nice guy, Other guy pulled out and he asked if I wanted to purchase it. I'm waiting on the grey Cup in VIC and a couple of things to pan out with current cars but at this stage I told him no purely for the cosmetics. If it was a bit cleaner then I'd probably snap it up. Would probably make a great track day beater. Shame as I really wanted it to be good enough.

considering it wouldn't be too hard to replace some of the interior it might be worth it mate?

at this stage your in control as he has no other interest so maybe offer less to cover those cosmetic items?

if you have access to a workshop then you could also make it a mini project to getting that car some well deserved TLC to bring it back up to scratch.

You can easily pick up interior bits and pieces and as time goes on see to the stone chips maybe?

as plus you would be getting a lower Km example of a limited edition Meg 2!

just a thought :D

cheers

I'll keep it in mind but I think the 4 door is still more practical for me with two young kids if I ever need to take them in my car. Car would need a full resort too IMO.

I'll see how the cup is and go from there.

I've also contacted alpineaffair to see if they are negotiable on their R26. It's $14000 with 109000km

So back on this F1... How easy would it be to get door trims for it? Gear surround? new steering wheel? Carpets? New seats (may just be worth getting a pair or recaros) I do have a fixed back Sparco Ultra from the rally car but that may be overkill lol, and would the parts be expensive? I've never had a French car so leaning on you guys for expertise here. I can strip and install myself that's not an issue.

The gear shift boot isnt hard to replace plenty of 3rd party ones on ebay if not then there is always 2nd hand or dealership.

Unsure on door cards sorry as for seats might be cheaper to repair due to that colour combo.

I would post in the wanted thread or in the med 2 section and see what comes up.

Sorry I'm only good with meg 3s and not 2s.

I'll have a standard RS steering wheel with airbag in very good condition available soon if required. Along with a range of other interior bits.

Oh, and welcome by the way. Looking forward to a ride thread when you get your greasy mitts on one. The more 225 owners the merrier!!!

I'm tossing up buying what's available now or waiting but to be honest I don't know how often they pop up for sale. I would prefer one with xenons as I need decent headlights out in the country to dodge roos and wombats.

I really am set on a Meg. Let's see if I can get a decent one around the $10000 or cheaper mark

For what it's worth, I suggest you wait and get one you are happy with.  They do come up pretty regularly, but the good ones go very quickly as you will see from the threads here on "For Sale" etc...  Worth a read through those so you get a gauge on what sells for what, and the difference in spec and conditoon for the money they change owners for.

In my view, the cost difference between one that is pretty tired and rough and one that is pretty much mint and loved to death by its owner is relatively small.  You could not fix up a roughie for the cost difference especially if there are serious cosmetic or mechanical issues.

If the paint is crap, there's $10k right there, tyres a few $thousand, suspension can be costly to replace - most of them that are loved (especially from forum members here) have some mods in some major area, or have been meticulously maintained - or both!

Certainly there is the potential to buy a wreck and swap bits over and do all that, but if you want a very good  one, it will come up.  Your budget may be a little low for an absolutely mint, low km R26 (but again not by too much), but there are some 4 door versions, non-cups etc.. that will definitely be close to that budget that I have watched sell on the forum.

Good luck with the search, I look forward to reading the news that you have found exactly what you are seeking.

Thanks! A few thousand for tyres?! What tyres are you using lol. Na I get what you're saying.

I'm not set on an R26 I actually would prefer a 4 door cup.

I'll know more about money situation when I sell the wife's car and get her new one, I'll get what's left of that plus money from sale of mine.

I was initially looking at a Citroen C4 VTS but not enough go for me.

I do t know why ice never had a French car, I have always liked the design of them and have always love the big butt Megane!

Good luck with the search. I was just referring to how well Megs respond to sticky tyres. PSC2's on mine fall into the few thou per set is all.

I too really like the Meg 2.

And Clio 182s, and Meg 3s and Clio3s....

Bugger. They really are addictive beasts... :)
