Hi All - thinking about a clio 172

Hi All,

I'm from Victoria, and was thinking about getting a clio 172 for daily driving duties to and from work. My budget is around $5k or so and I have these two cars lined up - and will go look at them tomorrow. I've also searched around on the forums and should I bring it to Auto Paris or someone similar for a once over before purchase?

This has full service history, but they kms high? When is the next major service due, 200kms?

This is a tad more expensive, but when I spoke to this guy he seemed a bit off. He said that the previous owner had renault service history up until he brought it a year ago - but since then his friend had serviced it. It also has new plates (less than 2/3 months). does anyone have history/know of this car?

Any recommendations would be great

Thanks in advance

Welcome, are the two links the same?

Good maintenance is generally considered the key rather than kms. There are some well loved ones on here with higher kms than that.

The major service is time and km dependant, so you'll need to check when the belts were last done.

Good luck.

The 3 specialists in Melbourne most recommend are either Virage @ South Melbourne, Auto Paris @ Box Hill or Alpine Affaire @ Ringwood. Personally I use Alpine Affaire - I find Colin and the guys are excellent, and it is next door to Ringwood train station so convenient to get to/from work. If Ringwood is a bit out of your way then I have heard good things about Carl @ Virage...

i have learnt a new technique when negotiating to buy cars... have you ever seen "fast n loud" on foxtel? the guy buys and sells cars as his business.

he usually asks how much the seller needs for the car, answer is a bit lower than asking price, then he offers about half of what they say they need for the car and slowly works up a bit from there.

best bit is when they agree on a price and he pulls about double the price worth of cash out of his pocket and counts out what he owes them :)

so my advice is check out both, see which is in better nick and bargin hard :) keep as much cash in your pocket as you can for servicing/parts at a later date.

The OP might already know but if the belts need to be done - due 4 years or 100k's (although not many of these cars do 25k a year) - then it will be approx. $1200-1400 to get them done. If the car is approaching 200k then it will also be due for new spark plugs (change every 100k). Something to keep in mind when it's time to bargain...

Thanks for all the replies guys. I think I might be going to Virage, I assume they do pre purchase checks too?

I'll keep the negotiation tips in mind, what kind of figure should I be targeting? $4.5k for a clio 172 with 175kms and service history a reasonable price?

Cheers

Bill

Welcome mate!

The red one looks nice and tidy but could probably take some $$$ off for the high km and possibly parts/servicing needs.

Good luck 8)

The red car has ESP which means it has the later gearbox with a bolted together diff as opposed to a circlip on the earlier ones. That for me counts for a lot given that it removes an inherent weakness. That aftermarket cruise looks interesting.
