Hi Everyone, help please

Hi Forum members, first post, keen to hear back.

I've been looking for a "classic" french hot hatch for a while. Checked out a few peugeot 205gti's but was always worried about the structure of a 30ish yr old car.

Not having access to a full blown workshop I started looking at the clio sport, as a similar if more modern version of the type of car I wanted. I have a budget that is less than 9K and want to get the best example for this money as I will be using the car as my daily drive.

My questions, purely on your experience or even gut reaction are;

-are there any immeadiate differences across 2001-2005 model clio sports when on a budget? (year range from budget and redbook pricing).

-given the increase in rego fees (NSW) for an over ten year old car, are my year ranges self defeating budget and servicing wise when I'm expecting the car to last at least 4 years(ie do my preferred models have a tipping point?)

-why do advertised prices on commercial car sale sites differ so much from this forum and redbook pricing?

with thanks

any feed back greatly appreciated

AFAIK, only difference between the Phase 2 172 of those years is the introduction of ESP and Cruise Control.

For 9K you can expect to find yourself a very nice 172!

2003 Ph2 172 cost me 10k 2+ yrs ago, My average service/repair cost has been 1 - 1.5k per year this includes timing belt, harmonic balancer and rear bearing one year, PAS pump and acc belt/tensioner recently. For me this has been fine as I bargained 1200 off purchase price for upcoming major service, and rest is within expected margin to keep a car that age in tip top condition.

My friend spent 5.5k total for a Ph2 172 with a year's rego. In the following year he has spent nothing on it. Has some interior trim damage and paint fading, otherwise perfect.

So it can be hit or miss.

Be aware major service is very expensive and minor is expensive. Big factors, watch out for 100k mark. Also stock disks/pads seem to go at a certain point so make sure they have been changed. There's a big list of what to look out for floating around, search this forum.

Get a well loved car off here and you can't go wrong.

Welcome Paul.

Most covered above, so all the best with the hunt. Go 2003 onwards as the ESP button does make a hell of a difference IMHO.

Service her well and on time... that is the best way to go.

Cheers,

WOLF

Hi mate, If you are interrested, one of the committee members of the Renault Car Club of qld has a 02 LE Clio Cup (the first shape here) for sale. He has had it from new and I think it has about 120km on it. It is very well kept. He is selling it as he has bought a R26. Interestingly he seems to prefer the Clio so get in before he changes his mind. If you are keen pm me your email and I will forward the pics and details he sent out to club members. Cheers

I'd like to read that post if anyone remembers where it was filed. The guy I bought it off, up in Hornsby NSW, was a good bloke, i'm sure he was a little sad to see it go. He needed a larger car as his family where coming to stay with him.

I'm using it as my everyday car, so haven't had a chance to really drive outside of traffic. Hopefully when its school holidays the roads will clear out enough to really appreciate it.

Thanks for the feedback

PM Vukie, see what he has to say, then you can go looking.

Matt205 also bought a rough RS Clio, and it's been nothing but angelic. Could be you're jumping at shadows.

I picked up my 172 Cup for $7k the guy had it posted for $7600 but I took it to Paul V for a once over. Paul told me it needed a new harmonic balancer so I knew what I was getting into.

The bloke said he felt that he went beyond the call of duty by meeting me half way the first time we meet (he lived an hour away from me) and by taking the car to Paul V - I agree that he was keen to sell the car but personally I needed that level of comfort that a Paul V check over gives you before I will buy a 11 year old Clio with 156K on the clock.

I hope the car is ok in the end and you don't have any trouble with it.

Sorry to say this but Its very confidential because I had that car at around a month ago by the new owner ( Hornsby guy) saying that he just bought it and was blowing black smoke like hell!!! He only told us to change the oil and put fresh elf oil but the spark plugs are covered between oil and coolant!!! So in few words that means major problems and as soon as he took it out of the shop the car was on sale again!!!! So please BE CAREFUL !!!

Thanks jucafodisport.

Not the best news, but thanks for your concern.

Thats pretty much what Vukie told me.

The car seems to be running ok, no smoke, no obvious loss of power. The idle, stopped in traffic does have a bit of a lumpy feel. The start up diagnostic had a t___ code, which from the forum I believe is fuel system. I cleared it and it hasn't come back yet(2 days).

I'll get a diagnostic done at a local Renault place and see if theres any major damage showing up.

I'm assuming the plugs wern't changed?

Just goes to show-ALWAYS get an independent inspection.

My fault for being to eager.
